Mindy gives me quick hug before I leave. It is a kind, if awkward hug. I do my best to sweep aside fluttering mental images of last night. The storm. The flooding. The intimate moments we shared late into the night. I can dwell on it later. Now I need to get back to business.

I look at Mindy’s van, still full of boxes of champagne and a large crate. Yesterday’s attempt at delivering these items was a failure. My boss has entrusted me with the task for the sake of her precious gala. There is nothing like the threat of getting fired to suck the goodwill out of helping a charity. I’ll have to find a way to thank her for “volunteering” me.

I take a minute to call ahead and confirm that someone is actually available to receive the delivery this time.
