Chapter 5
by Shibbar
A chilly, though refreshing, breeze passes through the dale.
Bridge
A simple stone bridge spans the southern river, continuing the path leading south. It is astonishing what difference one river-width can make; on the northern side the soil is wet but earthy, with long healthy looking grass; on the other side however, the ground is unnaturally muddy, and the grass yellow and limp. The ground is so muddy in fact, it is difficult to take a step without being sucked right in. Most avoid this region if they can, and if they can't, they make sure it is a short visit.
The bridge has been here far longer than the goblins, and it shows; the stonework had eroded in places, though the supports are strong and will no doubt lift the bridge for many years to come. The river is deep and murky, so it is quite nice to have such a sturdy bridge. Long overgrown reeds and marsh-thatch sit upon the banks as if thick walls, preventing most from being able to even access the river, though there are a few places where the plants are subsided and fishing can be done. However, fishing is much better upriver, and not many make use of the water here. It sees much more traffic in the spring, when crawdads start to spawn. Sometimes, though very rarely, large crocodiles will swim from downriver in the south. These are dangerous large creatures, but very rewarding if killed; their meat is soft and tender, a mix between white fish and chicken.
However, if the occasional giant croc wasn't enough for the fishermen to avoid these waters, there is another threat; Trolls.
Trolls are large brutish creatures, with skin as dark and hard as stone, and tusks stronger than of any orc or boar. They wander along rivers and occasionally, if they spot an abandoned structure along it, will take up residence there. Such was the case with this bridge. Luckily, this particular troll is somewhat friendlier than most, and the chief made a deal with them; they protect and tend to the bridge, and in return they don't get harassed, and receive enough bone for them to last through the winter.
{If Day = 1}It seems like today the troll has decided to keep to themselves under the bridge.{elseif Day = 2}It seems like today the troll has decided to keep to themselves under the bridge.{elseif Day = 3}Something seems off. There are signs of a battle; dark brown blood speckles the stonework. What happened here?{endif}
