The last day of school

Chapter 4

"Millie my dear, can you hear me?" Megan asks playfully and doesn't get an answer. Then she looks at you. She takes a deep breath and says: "I think you are doing the right thing for her."

You look at her briefly and smile before you concentrate on the street again. You have stated many times that you do not want to be disturbed while driving, but Megan resists the rule - like every day - on the grounds that you could drive a car well and that Millie is not responsive anyway. The argument that you carry the most important things in your life sometimes silences her, but not today and you can't be angry with Megan either. Talking to her is always interesting, always funny and you always have something to think about later. But not about her tits on your back! Not about her lips! Not ... oh shit ...

"Thank you Sis," you say lovingly and smile at the street in front of you. "I just hope that she will be better soon."

"Is she still talking in her sleep?"

"Sometimes. But increasingly rare." Megan looks out the window and only continues talking after a while. You can't resist and look at her briefly from the side. But you don't like what you see. She looks serious and her forehead is wrinkled.

"I think it's good that she has someone to show her at night that she doesn't have to be afraid of being close. Mum wants her to get through this on her own, but I don't think that's a good idea. How you do it will make Millie feel much better much faster."

"Mum knows what she's doing. She's more experienced than me in something like this,” you say to protect your mother. But you also acknowledge that there is another reason why you are not supporting Megan on this one point.

"I do not lie down with her. She lies down with me. I don't know what I'm doing to help her."

"Oh come on. Stop that,” Megan says suddenly, and something in her voice makes you take your eyes off the road. You cannot really interpret her looks and she turns back to the side window quickly. But you know your sister too well. Something is wrong here. Is she angry... or...

"It is good for Millie to know that she can come to you in the evening when she is lonely and sad, when she doesn't know where to put her thoughts. It is good for her to know that she can look forward to the morning when the first thing she sees is your face,” Megan explains. And yes, there is something negative in her voice. Shit... she is sad you suddenly recognize and it hits you like a hammer. You didn't expect that. Yes, it's actually just a little thing, but that's not how Megan is. Especially when it comes to Millie, she is always happy and accommodating, just like you.

But here and now she just looks out of the side window. She should actually be happy and you see no reason why anything could have changed while driving. So it must be something that has been nagging at her for a long time and has only now penetrated her protective armor.

You let the past weeks pass by in front of your mind's eye and you notice that Megan has clashed with her mother more often than usual. You shrugged that off, you had to take care of Millie, but when you see the look on her face, you also notice that Megan has been talking less and less in the past few weeks. Not with you, and that may be the reason why you were so blind, but now you realize it.

Before you can answer her you have already arrived at the school Millie attend. As a gentleman - like every morning - you get out with her, hand her her backpack and hug her. But today she surprises you by hugging you more tightly in return. Maybe it's because her classes end up earlier than both of Megan and yours and so she has to go home alone. You can feel her hair on your cheek and her arms around your neck. Both sisters have to stand on tiptoe to hug you and you admit that you like this little gesture very much. It underlines your role as a big, protective brother.

"See you later BB."

"See you later, Little One. Take care of yourself” you smile and wave after her goodbye. Millie also calls Megan, but she waves only briefly and then turns back to the window. Before you get in, you look at your sister in the car again and make a decision.
