Chapter 8 by WinstonSmith WinstonSmith

How does Jessica explain herself?

She is honest

You're not sure how to react. Your immediate inclination is to ask Jane why she is naked.

Instead, you turn the television off. The silence that ensues seems implacable, as if it had always been there, hidden somewhere inside your relationship. You turn to where Jane had just exited to see Jessica and her boyfriend (you vaguely remember his name sounding like 'shit', which seemed apt) standing outside the bedroom door.

Finally, you find your voice. "Why are you naked?"

Jane looks between you and Jessica, who shrugs. She looks back to you. "Does it matter?"

For a brief moment, you think of hitting her. You're not sure where this thought came from but it leaves you as surreptitiously as it had come. You feel drained. It becomes difficult to swallow.

Jane turns to go back to her bedroom door, to continue whatever she had been up to prior to barging outside. You tell her to stop, your voice louder than you (or her) had ever heard you raise it. She looks at you with surprise, and, yes, curiosity.

"What?"

What do you tell her?
