Kyle cuts her off 'sit with me'

Tanya walks confidently toward the popular girls' table, ready to make her mark on the second day of the school year. She'd spent all summer plotting how she'd supplant her main rival, Whitney, as THEE MOST POPULAR GIRL in class. She's only two tables away when she hears a voice behind her call out "Hey Tanya, I caught up with you!" She knows the voice so well as belonging to Kyle. As usual, she tries to ignore his voice like a gust of wind but instead, her body freezes and she turns. She looks right at him and Kyle bites his tongue.

"Uh," he stammers, "Boy, you walk fast, I-I-I wanted to catch up with you." Kyle holds his breath. He spent all summer reading books n how to be more confident and trying to teach himself to tell people what he wanted instead of simply shutting himself up. He didn't think it would work so easily only two days into the school year. And, holy cats, with Tanya! His longtime crush! he blurts out, "we should have lunch together!"

Tanya can't help but start laughing. Kyle Boyne, the biggest nerd in the school, wants to have lunch with her, one of the most popular girls in school? Kyle feels himself shrinking as the laughter comes out of her mouth. He braces herself for Tanya's usually cold and cruel retort. "We should have lunch together," she says between laughs. Tanya stops laugh as she hears the words and they both look at one another with shared "wait what just happened" expressions. Tanya, befuddled by the fact that she felt herself wanting to have lunch with Kyle. Kyle, unsure if she was being sarcastic.

Well, the direct approach has worked thus far, so he plays his cards and hopes she was serious. He tells her where they should sit together.
