The Tutor steeples his fingers. "Is there any error in the Prefect's account?" Preston Sharper asks.

You and Fay cannot deny the accuracy of the statement. Partial and unfair, perhaps, but accurate.

"Very well," the Tutor says. He waves the Prefect off in dismissal and takes a moment to look you over as the Prefect departs. "Well now, what shall we do with you?"

Morgan, you will be moving into the cell next to the Warden. She will be taking you more directly in hand. Fay, you will be sharing a room with Pomerine Duval, a third-year visiting scholar."

To be away from Fay! You thought you were done blubbering over little cruelties, but tears flow down over your cheeks. For all the games you'd seen played by the staff upon the students at Minerval, this seemed far more painful and arbitrary.

"Your things have already been moved," the Tutor says. "Fay, the Prefect will take you to your new room. You may go."

Fay squeezes your hand, a final warm touch. Somehow it makes you feel worse.

Preston Sharper traces a sigil in the air with his wand. Your eyes are drawn to it. Things fade and blur. When you blink back into focus, you find yourself eye to eye with the Warden. You're no longer in your robes, but in your nightgown.

"It has been a long day for you, Morgan," Barbara Torch says. "Let us start fresh in the morning." She raises her wand. "SOMNUS," she intones.

Sleep closes in.
