Getting closer

Not wanting to risk hitting a rock or other obstruction, the pair inched forward in the general direction of the dock they had departed the day before. Though it had not rained in a few hours, the lake was still completely fogged over and neither could see more than a few feet in front of them.

“See anything yet?” Zack asked his gorgeous companion.

“Nothing yet, Baby. You sure you had those logs in your car?” Heather responded.

“Yeah I always keep about a half dozen of them. I only brought two with me to the island. We’re a good ways off from the dock, so it’ll be a while before we see it.”

“I just hope there’s nobody out here on a motorized boat today,” the brunette sighed. “They’d never see us in time.”

“Just keep an eye out. Let me do all the paddling,” Zack instructed, as he began alternating his strokes to keep their canoe straight.

The pair crawled through the water for about an hour with Zack paddling just fast enough to keep them moving, but slow enough to give his girlfriend enough time to serve as a lookout. A faint noise on the invisible horizon caught the young beauty’s ear.

“Do you hear that?” Heather squealed.

“No. What is it?”

“It sounds like a…” Heather paused to listen closer. “Like a dog barking. It’s coming from that way!”

“I can’t quite see which way you’re pointing,” informed Zack.

“It’s off to our left. Waaaaaay off!”

“Could be Roscoe. Maybe he’s planning on meeting his girlfriend when she pulls up to the dock?” Zack giggled.

“Shut up!” Heather grumped at Zack recalling how the dog was all over her the other day. “Wait! I see something. Looks like a candlelight.”

“How far off is it?”

“It’s a good ways off in front of us. Just keep doing what you’re doing back there. I’m gonna start paddling again,” Heather replied as she picked up her paddle and joined Zack in the effort to get back to the cabin.
