Make a run for it
Eyya quietly but deftly glided out of the cell and made her way to the only other one opposite hers. There was the light jangle as she tried various keys on the cell until one clicked. She pushed the door open - Marcus was sitting on the floor of the cell. Despite having been rouged up and bruised he still looked dignified and stoic. His epaulets had been ripped off – but he carried his command on his person.
“Marcus, come on, lets go” she whispered.
“Eyya?!” Marcus exclaimed.
“Yes - no time - lets go” she whispered
Marcus quickly jumped up and they creeped their way out of the cell. Violent thunder rocked the boat side to side in the storm and made it groan. Lighting flashed sporadically and illuminated the two figures quietly meandering their way up towards the deck of the ship.
As they neared the small door leading out onto the deck - Marcus lightly placed a hand on Eyya’s shoulders and asked her
“We need a plan here – I trust you – what should we do?” Eyya stopped and pursed her lips – her eyes briefly drifting out through a small porthole window out onto the rough seas.
“The island may have Orcs and Goblins but we have dealt with those kinds many times. We steal a rowboat from the the port side of the ship and get to the shore. We can figure out the rest later” She whispered quietly but with a sense of urgency.
Marcus nodded gravely. Just as they were about to open the door they heard soldiers shouting and rousing others.
“They broke out of the cells! Everyone out now and find them!” The voice of Dennis boomed from below them- somehow loud enough to be heard over the thunderstorm.
“Shit – lets go”
They burst out onto the deck. It was covered in foamy water which sloshed from side to side as the boat rocked. The moon was still visible through the stormy clouds and it illuminated to deck in a glowing white light. They sprinted towards the row boats at the port side of the deck. The boats were flimsy and not designed to be used in rough seas. But they had no choice – they were close enough to the shore so that they would have a chance. They quickly began cutting the ropes binding the rowboats to the side of the ship. They would have to cut the ropes and then let it fall down into the water. Then would come the difficult part – in which they would have to jump off the side of the ship and get to the rowboat before it was swept away. It would be difficult - but it was possible.Eyya cut the second to last rope just as soldiers burst onto the deck.
“Stop! Hands up!”
The soldiers aimed the blue and gold rifles at the pair of them. They both raised their hands.
“You stupid fucking prick Marcus. I even made the effort to spare your little girl over there and you still try to fuck me like this. GRAB THEM NOW!” he boomed. Just then another huge flash of lighting and then thunder boomed around them. The lightning lit up the entire deck and the loud crash of the thunder. In the bright white flash - time slowed down, Marcus turned and slashed the last rope on the boat setting it loose towards the water. What felt like milliseconds later he turned and grabbed Eyya and. Pushed her off the deck towards the boat and the ocean floor. As she fell she heard the sound of loud bangs of rifles being fired. Bullets pierced Marcus’s chest each - one causing his body to jerk with the impact. Eyya watched in horror as she fell towards the ocean floor as the only father she had ever had was blasted over and over again. She crashed into the ocean moments after the boat. Still in shock and acting on instinct – she grabbed a wooden handle on the small boat and held on for her life as the boat began to spin and careen with the rough waves.
