German Classes, a thread

Chapter 12 by Peter_ENF

Today there was only German class. No gym. No distractions. Victoria Chapell was wearing a wool dress—dark green, warm, knee-length, modest enough for 1970 and for herself. Underneath, without feeling she owed it to the class, she’d put on lace. Black. Tight-fitting. A private act of defiance after the days when fabric had meant nothing.

Noah stood up.

“Good morning, Ms. Chapell.”

“Parts of a sentence,” she said. “Subject. Predicate. . Open your notebooks. Tomorrow is your oral exam.”

The front row took notes. Levi sat by the window, too close to the fan, which had been running on setting two since morning because it was too warm. A soft hum. The wool barely moved.

Victoria walked along the blackboard. Her dress swayed. Levi bent over as if to pick up a pencil. His fingers found the hem. A thread. Thin. Loose. He didn’t pull it tight. He held the end in the breeze.

The fan sucked it in.

At first, Victoria didn’t notice anything. She was explaining adjectives. She wrote an example. She turned to face the class—and the hem was no longer at her knee. It was higher. Noticeably so. Mid-thigh. Wool curling up as if someone had pulled on a thread of life.

“Ms. Chapell,” Maya said. Not loudly. Just precisely.

Victoria looked down.

“What?”

The thread was still running. The fan sucked it in, wound it around the grille, didn’t snap, and kept going. The wool dress grew shorter with a quiet, ugly rustling. Levi took his hand away, as innocent as a sentence without a subject.

“Dress code,” Maya said, already opening her notebook. “Your dress is way too short. You’ll have to take it off. If your clothes are too short, blah blah blah, loss of the garment. Any garment that breaks the rule will be confiscated and cut up.”

“But you already have that,” she said, looking at Maya… Victoria reached for the hem. The fan kept pulling. The wool wrapped itself around the metal, tight, stupid, and irreversible. “It’s an accident. The dress wasn’t too short.” She knew it was no use. No excuses. She simply let go and watched as the fan continued to devour the dress. The dress now ended halfway down her hips. The black lace of her panties was already a shadow beneath it, and the seam of the dress gaped like an open mouth of wool. A little later, the matching bra joined it.

“Rules are rules,” Maya said. “And you’re a repeat offender. The penalty for a repeat offense: public shaming. Naked.” “That’s not possible,” she said. Her voice remained firm. “Public shaming means the whole school will see me—including minors.”

Levi cleared his throat.

“Then I have an idea. We’re having a party on Saturday after the exam. Here in Building B. No underclassmen. Just our class. You’ll come and dance with us. Naked. That’s our wish. And it won’t cost a thing.”

Victoria looked at him. Then at the fan. Then at the wool on the grille. Then at Maya. Noah didn’t grin.

“Only if you pass,” she said.

Silence.

“All of you,” she added. “The exam on Saturday. If you all pass, I’ll dance. Naked. At your party. If not, the wish is off, and I won’t come to the party.”

Noah nodded slowly.

“Agreed.”

Maya gave a thin smile.

Victoria reached behind her neck. The wool dress—or what was left of it—slipped off her shoulders, caught on the lace, and fell. The fan held a tangle of green like a trophy.

She stood in front of the class in black lace.

Not naked. Not yet. The bra was made of tight, sheer fabric. Her nipples were dark beneath it, and her underbust line was sharply defined. The panties were a narrow triangle with straps across her hips. Half of her buttocks remained exposed, and her shaved pubic area was clearly visible as a translucent shadow behind the floral pattern. She smiled. If she was going to be naked again, then at least in beautiful lingerie.

“German,” she said hoarsely. “We were covering the parts of a sentence.”

She stepped up to the blackboard. The chalk scraped. Her back was bare except for the straps. When she raised her arm, her breasts lifted in the lace bra, and Levi forgot the predicate.

“If you can’t find the subject,” said Victoria without turning around, “don’t look in my cleavage. Page twenty-two.” It was a good day.

Victoria didn’t take the ruined wool dress with her. It hung on the rack like a sentence that no one was allowed to finish.

She walked across the gravel in her lace dress. She’d taken the blazer off the hook and draped it over her shoulders—not quite buttoned up—and thought about Saturday.

About the exam.

About a party that cost nothing and revealed everything.

And about how German had been the most honest class today: Someone had pulled a string. The rest was just a consequence.
