How goes the announcement?
Mixed...
True to John's word, he has the first sailor to rise give you a tour of the ship - enginering areas (big, but the stop is brief - it's a 'don't go in there unescorted, here's why:' stop), quarters (the captain and first mate get small apartments; everyone else shares a barracks-like zero privacy area), restrooms (no separation, but has toilets and showers), mess hall (which you've seen), rec room (big TV, couches, and a library of videos... bioks too), gym (a couple treadmills and a few of those home gym setups bolted to the floor), a path to the deck for when you want fresh air, and so on... he then leaves you alone in the rec room.
You go through the movies... and 'movies'... in the library, settling on 'Waterworld'... and about halfway through the show John Big walks in, his face carefully neutral. He calmly sits down next to you, and asks, "That announcement you plan to make... does it have anything to do with why Edward's scars are gone?"
You nod, "Yes. I didn't know before today. It's both good news and bad."
He nods slowly, "Okay. Well... everyone's awake. The only place we're technically allowed to gather everyone at once is the bridge. Follow me."
"I'll need a kitchen knife or something for the 'prove it' portion," you mention as you get up.
The man idly pulls a pocket knife out... a six inch locking blade one, "Will this do?"
You accept it, "Thank you," and hold it... poping thr blade open and pricking your finger, which bleeds immediately, "Yes, thank you."
He leads you to the bridge, where everyone is gathered... and dead silent. Everyone is, simply, staring. And for some reason, it makes you feel very warm in your lower belly?
You steel yourself, and begin, "So... I didn't know last night, but it's clear now: I'm contagious." You lick your plump lips.
Nobody says a word, so you keep going, "That's both good news and bad. The good news, as you may have noticed, is that you're all now in perfect health... and you're going to stay that way..." you unfold the knife, take a breath, and open a big gash on your palm... oh that hurts... holding it out so everyone can watch as it visibly closes itself up. "I was a researcher on an immortality project... and the bosses were in a hurry, choosing to cut corners very recklessly and test it on me long before it was ready for human trials. The good news: It mostly works. Little things like a direct hit with a bazooka won't keep you down anymore - I know this from personal experience, and no, it was not pleasant - and you don't need to worry about getting sick ever again. The bad news: The genetic repair code doesn't recognize the Y chromosome as a standard variation, and 'fixes' it, which in turn means the body modeling and repair code will turn you all into women sometime soon, probably while you sleep. I was born a man."
The fat captain speaks up first, "That's a little far-fetched."
You shrug, "Beleive me or not. There isn't anything anyone can do to stop it at this point."
The crew look at each other....
