Who/What killed the Shaman?

A Bolt from the Blue

Chapter 18 by Djinn-Drinka Djinn-Drinka

The Shaman’s body twitched as sparks flowed over the corpse from the smoking burn in its back. Fuu could smell burned fur and ozone as she and the Chieftain took in the scene. Standing just out of the tree line was a short woman with a rapier thrust forward, sparks blooming from the tip. “Get away from them, Villains.”

‘Young’ was the word that clicked in Fuu’s mind as she looked at the newcomer. She wore a blue coat that flowed behind her, embroidered with golden thread. Under that she wore a grilled white shirt and dark skirt that ended above her knees. Her hair was a long ponytail partially braided into an elaborate pattern. Her face was serious but her smile was a little too wide, more giddy child than smug swordswoman.

Fuu righted herself as the Chieftain bounded toward the woman. Before Fuu could act, the woman bolted forward and slid under the Chieftain’s pounce, slicing the back of one leg with the tip of her blade. The Chieftain growled in pain as he rolled to his feet, injured leg wobbling.

The new woman slid up next to Fuu with a ‘woo’ of excitement. “I’m here to help! Are you good to fight?”

‘Young and skilled’ Fuu mentally amended as she looked at her new ally. She had mismatched eyes, one blue and one green, with freckles peppering her face. Fuu stood up straight and nodded, looking around at their enemies. “What’s your name?”

Robin!” She said happily as she readied her blade and looked around at their opponents.

The Chieftain was limping. Robin’s new damage with the barely healed damage he took from Fuu, before her capture, was piling up. The other Gnolls had identified the threat and, with the lust spell fading, abandoned their conquests. Emmaline and Liv, unlike Becky, were barely conscious. Even if they were able-bodied, their calls for ‘more cock’ meant they would be no help. Fuu readied her blade before her, facing a dozen Gnolls quickly catching their breath as they closed in. Robin pressed her back to Fuu’s, holding her rapier up before her in a readied stance. Robin’s chipper voice had only a slight waver to it. “Ready?”

Fuu was still thinking of a plan, but before she could articulate one, she noticed the shattered remains of the Shaman’s staff. The gnarled, curbed head of the staff was sitting near Fuu and Robin and pulses with a pink light. Something was building up and building fast. She didn’t know what the magic would do, but it couldn’t happen to them. Fuu lashes out with her bladed staff, trying to knock the pulsing wood away.
