A Mana Pool

Chapter 15 by adapenguinboy

Grashok stirred from sleep, blinking in the soft dimness of his cave. The fire had burned down to glowing embers, casting faint shadows across the rocky walls. The wolf cub, still curled beside him, yawned and stretched. A gnawing sensation tugged at his stomach, but thirst pressed harder.

Both he and the cub needed water. Grashok grimaced, remembering his usual source—the small stream that had once trickled through the cave. It had vanished along with the rest of the cave’s natural features the moment he had claimed it as his dungeon. Venturing outside to gather water was possible, but it carried risk neither of them needed.

He reached into his inventory, calling up the list of resources he had stored. There it was: the stream, now reduced to a simple entry—Water Spring. He stared at it, uncertain. Could it be placed back into the dungeon? Would it flow again if given a room?

After a moment’s hesitation, he opened the dungeon’s layout. The corridor he had carved into the mountain stretched ahead, opening into the entrance hall, with space for additional chambers. The system allowed him to place the spring somewhere—he only had to choose.

Scrolling through his limited options, a single prompt appeared:

Create Room: Mana Pool

Cost: 1x Water Spring

Grashok’s brows furrowed. Mana Pool was not what he had expected, but it was the only option. He selected it, and the dungeon’s layout shifted, showing a new offshoot chamber branching from the hall.

With a final command, the room took shape. A new message flickered before his eyes:

Room Created: Mana Pool Room

Natural Feature: Water Spring

Current Size: Small (1x1)

Status: Functioning

Curiosity piqued, Grashok rose and motioned for the cub to follow. Together they padded down the narrow corridor to the new chamber. He pushed open the door with a creak, revealing a small room of smooth stone walls. At its centre lay a pool of crystal‑clear water, shimmering faintly as though stirred by an unseen breeze.

Relief washed over him. Not only was this water, but something about it felt… different. The air itself seemed charged, faint traces of magic woven into its stillness. The cub scampered forward, lapping eagerly at the pool before splashing its paws in, sending ripples across the surface.

Grashok knelt beside it, dipping his hands into the cool water. He raised a handful to his mouth. It was refreshing, invigorating even, a faint tingle running up his arms as he drank. He chuckled as the cub pawed at the ripples, snapping playfully at its own reflection. For a few moments, they simply enjoyed the pool together—Grashok drinking deeply, the cub darting about in clumsy delight.

When the cub finally flopped down at the edge, dripping and content, Grashok leaned back on his heels. The pool wasn’t just useful; it was a comfort, a place where both of them could rest and recover. He refilled his battered flask, corked it tightly, and gave the cub a fond scratch behind the ears before rising to his feet.
