The Fairy

Chapter 3 by DakotaDave DakotaDave

Update day. Fairy Glade, West Fenmoor

She took a long look at herself in her small pool of water. She was gorgeous, her bright pink hair, her pearlescent wings, her fair, pale, blue skin. Even the bumble bee fur bikini she wore was beautiful. The only thing not beautiful was this cave. She didn’t belong in this cave.

I never should have left home. She thought.

“Wait, when did I leave home?” she said out loud. She could remember waking up in this cave so many times, but now? Now she also remembered that she left the Fairy Queen to find her own glade and start her own kingdom. She even knew that other fairies from her kingdom thought of her as a rogue fairy. When had all that happened? She could remember the cave, the pool, but she had no memory of anyplace where other fairies lived. She couldn’t remember the look of another fairy, but she knew they didn’t approve of her choice. She knew that her mother, the queen, cried when she left. But she couldn't remember what the queen looked like.

She had other thoughts too, she wanted to build something, wanted to make the queen envious. She couldn’t remember feeling that before, and yet she knew she had always wanted it, it’s why she left after all.

“No!” she shouted in her tiny voice.

That wasn’t true, she hadn’t left home, she didn’t even know a queen. She hadn’t had a mother, she had a cave, a pool, a reflection and some trees outside. She had never wanted to build anything, only to wake up somewhere other than this cave.

This update sucked. She was used to things changing, sometimes the gods did that, they’d change everything, send a message and go on about their lives. But this was different, they were lying to her now. They’d never done that before; they’d never told her she had a mother and she made her mother cry. What had she done to the gods to make them lie to her like this?

She remembered when she had gained control of the vines, that was a great update. She had felt then like she had always been able to do it, but that was just an ability they changed, not her story, not her life.

She was angry. She fluttered as aggressively as a fairy can out of her cave, out to the trees. She wanted to make something hurt. She wouldn’t make the squirrels or birds hurt; she was angry, not evil. She wouldn't hurt the honey bees either. So she flew around till she found a Snacker. Those stupid, burrowing insects that were far too big to leave no trace when they dug underground. She could hurt them. They would pop their stupid beaks up into her glade, stand there with their ugly faces and their hairy tails, making everything around them less attractive just by existing.

She yelled her anger out at the offensive insect and twisted her hand into a fist. Vines shot out of the ground and coiled around the Snacker. It struggled to move as it bit at the vines, trying to get free. She twisted her fist harder, willing her vines to squeeze the Snacker till it popped like a seed pod. The Snacker bit and dug at the vines, eventually breaking free and running at her. She let it.

The Snacker charged and bit at her, she dodged it easily. It bit again, she laughed as she stood perfectly still and watched it miss her. She was a fairy, this thing was so far beneath her. She didn’t even bother to fly out of its range. It could bite and claw at her all day and never hit her. In fact, she only had to actively dodge one out of every 5 swings or so.

“Stupid, ugly pathetic Snacker!” She yelled at it. She wasn’t truly angry at it, but whatever god was responsible for its existence she hoped was insulted.

It missed a few more times as she taunted and yelled insults at it. Then her anger started to fade, and she grew bored of her game. She cast [poison sting] at the Snacker, then cast [tangle of grass] on the ground around it and flew away, smiling at the sounds of its angry cries as it slowly died, trapped in place. Its life as pointless as its face was ugly.

The fairy flew back to her favorite tree, right in the middle of her glade. It was just far enough into the glade that she couldn’t see the cave at all. She laid down on its most comfortable branch and rested. Or at least she tried. Her thoughts didn't let her. The gods had named this place Fairy Glade after her. They gave her beautiful trees with leaves that complimented her gorgeous pink hair. Yet then made her wake up in a dark, damp, filthy, fucking cave.

“AAAUUUGHH!” she screamed.

She flitted up the branch to the trunk of the tree, leaned against the soft bark and cried. It was unfair that a creature as lovely as her should be forced to wake up in a cave. But even worse, now the gods were trying to convince her she had a proper home, a fairy home, with a fairy queen. . . her own mother, and she left it to be here. Like she would choose to wake up every morning in that awful, boring, ugly cave.

Whatever god was behind this she was certain it was ugly and bitter.

She turned and punched the tree. She wouldn’t hurt it, fairy punches wouldn’t hurt a dandelion, but she was angry and it felt good.

Build Fairy Treehouse?

The hell is that? A command message on her favorite tree? That was new. But more importantly, Fairy Tree House??? That sounded nice, not ugly and dark and damp. She clicked it.

You have not claimed this land, you cannot build here. To claim land, use Claimant Crystal

“The fuck is that?” she asked. Then, as if she passed a skill check, she remembered reading the words Claimant Crystal in the update notes.

Something about them no longer dropping from bosses, but automatically getting one at level three. That had to be a player change. It also said the behavior was changed when the owner dies. . .

She sat and thought for a moment, she needed to claim the grove to build a treehouse, needed a claimant crystal to claim the land, and heroes had the crystals. . . she needed to find some heroes.

“Sorry about earlier,” she said to the sky “whatever god did this, could you maybe help me get a crystal? I’m sure you aren’t nearly as ugly or bitter as I said you were.”
