Aegis Issue #1.4: The Underground Tunnels

You follow Ghost through the winding streets of Cresthaven, the weight of his words pressing down on you like the humid night air. The local synagogue looms ahead, its architecture grand and imposing, a beacon of faith and community. But Ghost doesn’t hesitate. He strides past the main entrance, slipping around the side of the building like a shadow given form.
“This way,” he murmurs, pressing his palm against the cold stone wall. His fingers sink into the brick as if it’s made of water, his body following until he’s halfway submerged. He glances back at you, his mask barely visible in the dim light. “You coming, or are you just going to stand there?”
You clench your fists, steeling yourself, and step forward. With a deep breath, you channel your strength and slam your fist into the wall. The bricks shatter like glass, the debris crumbling inward to reveal a hidden passage, a tunnel leading underground. Ghost smirks. “Subtle. Real subtle.”
The tunnel is narrow, damp, and reeks of mildew. The air is thick with the scent of something metallic, something wrong. You follow Ghost deeper underground, the darkness pressing in around you. Then you hear it: a whimper. A child’s voice.
Your heart lurches. You break into a run.
The chamber opens up before you, a nightmare lit by flickering fluorescent lights. Cots line the walls, each one occupied by a child, their faces gaunt and terrified. Some are asleep, others wide-eyed and trembling. Rage surges through you, white-hot and uncontrollable.
“Found them,” Ghost says, his voice tight with something you’ve never heard from him before. Disgust.
Then the soldiers come.
They’re not the thugs you’re used to fighting. These men move with precision, their tactics military, their weapons advanced. IDF or Mossad. You don’t have time to think. You move.
Your fists connect with jawbones, your strength sending bodies flying. Ghost phases in and out of the fray, his strikes swift and brutal. Within minutes, the soldiers are down, groaning or **** on the cold concrete floor.
Then he appears.
Rabbi Shmuley stands in the doorway, his expression a mask of outrage. “How dare you!” he spits, his voice trembling with fury. “This is an attack on our faith, on our people! You are anti-Semitic monsters!”
Ghost lunges.
His hand phases through the air, aiming straight for the Rabbi’s throat. You move faster.
Your arm shoots out, grabbing Ghost’s wrist mid-strike. “No.”
Ghost whirls on you, his eyes wild behind his mask. “He deserves it!”
“Heroes don’t kill,” you say, your voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through you. “He deserves justice. He faces a life in prison for what he’s done.”
Ghost snorts, yanking his arm free. “Prison? You’re cute.” He gestures to the Rabbi, who’s now backed against the wall, his face pale. “You think they’ll let him rot in a cell? You think the people in power will let him talk?”
You don’t waver. “I believe in the system.”
Ghost scoffs, shaking his head. “That’s the main problem with you heroes. You still believe. You have faith in the system, even when you really, really shouldn’t.”
For a moment, neither of you moves. Then Ghost steps back, his shoulders tense. “Fine. Your funeral.”
You turn to the Rabbi, your voice cold. “You’re done.”
