Sam's Parents?

Without really thinking, Ethan says the quiet part out loud. "You mean about her Mom? Er... Mom...S?"

June's jaw slacks slightly, her eyes going wide. Ethan didn't know it, but he said just about the most surprising thing he could have. "She told ya? Oh my..." She chuckles, reaching for the cream and sugar. "She must really like you..."

Ethan clears his throat, choosing not to clarify his actual source.

"Well... If you know that much..." June starts to add the cream and sugar, "That's right. Samantha is quite estranged from both of her parents these days. Her mother because of 20-some odd years of issues, and..." June looks over at Ethan, "Well, I'm sure you know about the other one."

Ethan nods, picturing Layla.

"Poor thing," June shook her head, "You know when it all first happened, it was little bit of karma, ya know? But these days..." She sighs, finishing adding the cream and sugar and starting to stir. "She's not the woman she used to be."

"Used to be?"

June snorts. "Layla Clarke, in her heyday, was quite the **** of nature." She gives Ethan a very knowing look. "Her headboard was scored so much it stripped the finish, ye get me?"

It takes Ethan a moment to 'get her', but he does. "Right..."

"Anywho," she stops stirring and sets the stick aside. "Layla isn't that person anymore. Pretty much everybody knows that, 'cept for Samantha. Damn shame." She shakes her head, putting the cap on the coffee cup. Shifting back to Ethan, she hands him the cup, giving him a hard look.

"Family can be complicated."

Ethan takes the cup from his elder cousin, nodding.
