The Demon King's Legion

Chapter 207 by reaper13

From the onset of the civil war, Jaron thought he had the entire Daemonum Custodes under his control. But apparently, there were some Tribunes that felt more loyal to the Demon King, then to him. As such, several Tribunes took their cohorts and turned against Jaron. But according to Nami, each of these Tribunes is an important and capable adventurer. For me, this means the ones that joined Ziges should be considered dangerous, and the ones that remained loyal to the previous Demon King are ones we could seek out to try and make an alliance with.

The first one for Nami to explain to us is obviously going to be the 1st tribune. He is an imp named Zepar, the inquisitor. He is of the heretic class, the demon version of a cleric and apparently he is a distant relative of the Demon King. Too far removed from the throne to be able to challenge the leadership of this kingdom, but close enough to call on the family lineage. When Jaron and Ziges prepared their rebellion, they made certain Zepar would be one of their conspirators. He was with them from the very beginning. Now that the civil war is over Zepar has taken it upon himself to seek out and hunt down whatever remnants of the loyalists are still out there. Hence they have nicknamed him the inquisitor.

The second tribune of the Demon King’s legion is a kobold woman named Aneth, the unassuming. Supposedly, she walked up to some village in Miktlan one day with no memory. Nobody knew who she was or where she was from, but she had magical weapons on her and was quite a capable fighter. She was transferred to Miktlan’s legion and served in their 1st Tribune’s personal party for a while. So, when the civil war began and Duke Vanth sided with the rebels, she followed like a loyal legionnaire would. During the civil war, the 2nd cohort of the Daemonum Custodes legion was completely wiped out, meaning Ziges had to build it anew from the start. He started by choosing Aneth as its tribune and the cohort has been fully rearmed by now. I find it odd that Nami didn’t tell us much about Aneth’s loyalty to Ziges. It makes me wonder if Aneth is really that loyal to Ziges, or if she’s just going with the flow.

The third cohort is a short alp named Nalai, the puny. From what Nami tells me, she had a rough time growing up. Though, being a monster tamer, she was able to make friends with some powerful monsters. The ability to tame monsters like this eventually landed her a position in the Demon King’s army, under the 3rd tribune. When Ziges started her rebellion, the tribune of the 3rd cohort was planning to side with the loyalists, but some people in his party protested against him. Nalai was with them as they performed their coup and after capturing their tribune, they marched him over to Ziges and declared their loyalty to him. Having gotten the allegiance of the 3rd cohort, Ziges decided to make Nalai its tribune.

For the fourth tribune, we have Angul, the phoenix. A succubus type demon who is also a spellsword with light magic, though a bit of an odd one. She was originally named Radna, but for some reason, the asked the flesh grafters to grow white feathers all over her wings and she wanted people to call her Angul from then on. The important thing for us is that Angul originally sided with Ziges, assuming the change of leadership would be for the better. At some point though, Angul realized she was on the wrong side. She didn’t defect right away, though. She first collected as much information as she could, then sabotaged the food stores and escaped with her cohort to the loyalists. Ziges took this betrayal personal and wanted to make an example of Angul. Eventually, his troops wiped out the 4th cohort and presented a pair of white feathered demon wings to him as evidence of Angul’s death.

Tribune nr 5 is a cat-type fiend named Verinne, the witch. She is of the mage class with a focus on dark and death magic, but also a skill that makes her crazy good at alchemy. When joining the Demon King’s legion, she was first assigned a position in Radna’s party, but eventually, she got promoted to tribune of the 5th cohort and could form her own party. When the civil war started, Verinne was on the side of the loyalists from the very beginning. During the war, Verinne’s cohort took heavy losses, until eventually only the women in her cohort remained. Realizing that continuing the war in the open would result in her being defeated, Verinne switched to a different approach. She would adopt a strategy of guerilla warfare. Focusing on smaller operations, like theft and sabotage and avoiding battle in the open. These days, Verinne’s cohort is in hiding, likely being hunted down by Zepar.

Next is Margdaran, the stalactite. A male kobold who is tribune of the 6th cohort. Magdaran only joined the Demon King’s legion because his father forced him to. Supposedly, their family has served in the Demon King’s legion for generations. It looks like the tradition is strong in Magdaran’s family because he made it all the way to tribune. He did have his issues with Zepar though, and once it even came to a fight between them. When Ziges started his rebellion, Magdaran was unsure which side he would be on, until her heard Zepar sided with Ziges. This motivated Magdaran to side with the loyalists, if only the have another chance at beating Zepar. It never came to that, though, as Magdaran’s cohort fell into a trap and was practically annihilated. The few who survived deserted, leaving Magdaran as a tribune of nothing. Magdaran disappeared that day and nobody knows what happened to him.

For the seventh tribune we have Niya, the infiltrator. Niya is an alp rogue and has served as a member in her sister’s party. At the start of the rebellion, Niya’s siter, Preta, was sent to kill the seventh tribune of the Demon King’s legion. Once that was done, Preta installed Niya as its new tribune. The dangerous thing about Niya is that she has a doppelganger skill, allowing her to take someone else’s shape. There are limitations to the skill, but when used correctly, it can make her quite dangerous.

As the 8th tribune we have Corson, the prospector. He is an incubus spellsword who can use earth magic. The interesting part about him is that he was able to form a party with only spellswords, each making use of a different magic element. This party formation made it so he could become the 10th tribune in Duchess Empusa’s legion. During the rebellion, Corson and his team were very successful. At times, they would capture an enemy legionnaire and have Sustra bring him to orgasm. Then she would infiltrate the enemy camp and gather as much information as she could, which she messaged telepathically to Corson. While in battle, Corson could easily lead his team by sending telepathic messages to all of them, regardless how loud the battlefield became. Eventually, the 8th cohort of the Daemonicum Custodes got wiped out and Ziges could reform it anew. With Corson as its tribune.

Tribune nr 9 is a lancer devil who goes by the name Shedim, the renegade. Shedim is neither beast tamer nor monster tamer and so can’t have the mount skill, but he really wanted to ride a horse into battle. So, he trained real hard to develop the ability on his own. The previous Demon King found this interesting and permitted Shedim to not only be tribune of her 9th cohort, but also suggested him to train everybody in the cohort to ride a horse to battle. This made it so the 9th cohort was able to quickly move from one place to another, which was especially useful to the loyalist during the civil war. But as the loyalists started losing, Shedim didn’t feel like fighting until also his cohort was wiped out. So eventually, he went rogue and turned his cohort into a thieves gang, plundering villages and small towns whenever he likes.

Finally, there is the 10 tribune. A ferret-type fiend who is an archer called Ophis, the strategist. Ophis first got the Demon King’s attention when he participated in an archery contest. He was too young to participate, so he snuck in and then nearly won. The Demon King felt this was a sign that Ophis had promise and allowed him to join her legion as a junior legionnaire. There would be no dangerous missions for him to go on, but he could get to learn about life in the legion. Ophis took to this kind of life pretty well and made it to joining the party of the 10th tribune. Shortly after though, Ziges started his rebellion and the 10th tribune was going to join the side of the rebels. Ophis could not abide by this and challenged his tribune for leadership. Ophis ended up winning the duel and became the new 10th tribune, thus keeping his cohort out of Ziges’ hands. Ophis next ran a campaign against Ziges that focused around deception and misinformation, making him a rather large thorn in Ziges’ side. As the years went by, the loyalists started losing and by now, the last of the loyalist dukes has been defeated. Ophis, on the other hand, has not been defeated yet and is as of this day still actively searching for ways to sabotage Ziges without allowing Ziges’ forces to discover where he or his cohort are hidden.
