Chapter 71 by BlueKnight
What will be the next raiding targets of tomorrow?
The second largest settlement within the Coalition called the Stonewall City.
Next day, you and the others woke up to learn that the next objective is to sack the second largest stronghold within the Coalition called the Stonewall City, which is located not that far from the Jackson Fortress.
By sacking it, it will caused a lot of damages to the Coalition both politically and economically! And so the march toward the Stonewall City begun!
According to Miss Stella, it is the second largest fortified stronghold within the Coalition and also located only a few days from the Jackson Fortress. So capturing such an important strategic location and having it sacked will definitely demoralized the Coalition into finally coming to the negotiation table.
For days and nights, the Allies marched to the Stonewall while also facing all sorts of resistances from both the locals and nature itself such a clash against one of the local forces that have been raised to put an end to the Allies' invasion that resulted in the battle called the Battle of Wheeler's Wells and the heavy rain during one of the nights.
In the aftermath of the Battle of Wheeler's Wells, the Allies have the wells occupied for a night to prevent the nearby settlements affiliated with the Jackson Fortress from coming to use them. And it was during that night when the heavy rain came upon you and the rest of the expeditionary ****.
By the noon of the forth day, you and the rest of the expeditionary **** finally arrived at the target that is the Stonewall City. But there is a problem. The city's defense appeared to be stronger than expected!
"Surely, the news about the several of their settlements ended up getting razed and then suffering another defeat must really spook them up." - You think as you're looking at the defense of the Stonewall City.
Once again, the army of the Allies split up into three divisions. This time, it is done with the intention to attack this fortified city from three sides with Lieutenant Moore's division will attacked from the north, Captain Rowland's division will attacked from the southwest, and finally, Commander Lawrence's division will attacked from the southeast.
And so, the Siege of Stonewall City has begun!
By using the lightweight breech-loading cannons carted by the maned chalicothere-like creatures and two-humped camel-like sheep, the Stonewall City is constantly being bombarded! And to make the matter worse for the defenders, the heavy rainfall from the previous night made considerably amounts of damages to the city's walls.
And by nightfall, the bombardments on the city ceased and you retired for the night along with the rest of the Allied troops. But then, the most unexpected surprise happened! One of the people in charge of the city's defense arrived with four guards!
"Hmm? What happened?" You asked as you're walking out of your tent after hearing a brief commotion outside and see that Valeria is standing with Lieutenant Moore with a group of strangers who you never see before and have a conversation with them near his tent.
Curious, you approached them.
"So you are offering to let us inside the city if you, your men and your family and their families are allowed to leave the city. Am I correct about this, Commander Cozens?" Elijah asked the leader of the group of strangers before him.
"Correct." Commander Cozens said as he's looking back the ghoul and the defector before him.
"But why? Why the sudden betrayal?" Valeria asked him back, curious that is he too never a believer of what the Coalition's driving ideology at all like her or not.
"Isn't it obvious, Stella?" Commander Cozens asked her back sarcastically as he turned to look at her, remembering who she is when she came to visit the Stonewall City on a few occasions.
"... I guess I am not alone in this..." Valeria said as she's keeping her eyes on him and his men.
"But what about the rest of the men under your direct command? Did they share such a belief with you too?" Elijah asked him back as he's narrowing his only usable eye at Commander Cozens.
"I always make sure that my men are well-disciplined when they took those who dictated to be killed in instead of doing what that fool preached." Commander Cozens said with a spat when he was referring to someone as a fool, who you presumed to be the one known as Matthews.
" So what do you say? If you uphold your end of the bargain, will we leave the breach opened for you and your men to enter the city unopposed. So what do you say, Lieutenant Moore?" Commander Cozens asked the ghoul back again, wanting him to answer with what he hoped will be the choice he desired.
"... hmm..." Elijah groaned as he's rubbing his chin with his right hand, showing that he is thinking about this matter critically.
"Very well..." Elijah as he's extending his right hand out for him to shake, which Commander Cozens replied by shaking his hand in return.
And so, a large group of people secretly leave the Stonewall City in a middle of the night while the breach in the walls that is the result of the constant bombardments and heavy rainfall is being left as it is just as promised.
By morning, Lieutenant Moore ordered an attack on the city and more than half of the troops in his division entered through unguarded breach with no opposition at all. And when most of Elijah's men entered the city, carnage ensued!
The Stonewall City, the second largest fortified location within the Coalition, has fallen!
How will the rest of the Coalition reacted to the fall of the Stonewall City? That's an interesting question. But first you have to survive the night ...
