Behind the Scenes: Day 9 Boss Fights

For the dungeon delves, I’m generally am going to let the dice decide how things go. A brief note about combat in my experience with the Powered by the Apocalypse system. Because the GM generally doesn’t touch dice, monsters tend to counter-attack at every reasonable opportunity in combat (instead of just getting a single turn). This means that the action economy difference between the monsters and the players is muuuch smaller than the usual DnD 5th edition combat encounter. Between that and the much lower health, combat tends to be more deadly.

I'm also keeping character sheets for these purposes and will post them as they change dramatically. Tina and Skye are below. Francis and Daphne will be posted in the date chapters. Since I forgot to post Indigo's initial sheet when it was appropriate, I got around to getting it up. You can find it several chapters back or here.

Here are the dice rolls, if you are curious.

Delve 1 Chapter – Big Tom Turkey (17 HP, attack: 2 damage), plus 4 regular turkeys (2 HP each, attack: 1 damage)

Surprise Round:

Francis (bow attack [Dex check, advantage]) – 13, crit hit on regular turkey, very dead

Skye (spend a charge on sword throw attack, auto success) – Auto crit with sneak attack applied on regular turkey, very dead. Sword charge remaining: 2

Tina (attempted Fire Bolt, autofail [no SP]) – PANIC!

Round 1:

Francis (bonus action- swap bow for sword, move to Big Tom, sword attack [Str check]) – 9, Big Tom HP remaining: 15.

Big Tom (counter-attack [go for the dick]), Francis reaction spent (Shield [Int check]) – 8, Francis takes 1 damage [HP left: 6, SP left: 4], Big Tom latches around his dick.

Tina (run around, panicking [Cha check for distraction]) – 12, both remaining regular turkeys distracted

Skye (move to retrieve sword, bonus action pick up sword, hold action for sword throw attack) – Auto crit with sneak attack applied on regular turkey, very dead. Sword charge remaining: 1

Round 2:

Francis (sword attack [Str check]) – 8, Big Tom HP remaining: 13

Big Tom (counter-attack [blow-job]), Francis Libido saving throw: 7, Francis takes 2 damage [HP left: 4], Francis has disadvantage on next Libido save.

Tina (run around, panicking [Cha check for distraction]) – 8, remaining regular turkey distracted, but gets an attack in. [HP left: 5]

Skye (move to retrieve sword, bonus action pick up sword, hold action for sword throw attack) – Auto crit with sneak attack applied on regular turkey, very dead. Sword charge remaining: 0

Round 3:

Francis (sword attack [Str check]) – 8, Big Tom HP remaining: 11

Big Tom (counter-attack [blow-job]), Francis Libido saving throw, disadvantage: 8, Francis takes 2 damage [HP left: 2], Francis has disadvantage on next Libido save.

Tina (Int saving throw to calm down, disadvantage) – 5, runs to hide

Skye (move to retrieve sword, bonus action pick up sword) – out of position to do anything else.

Round 4:

Francis (bonus action, store sword in inventory, attempt to pry Big Tom off his dick [Str check]) – 7, dick grapple broken.

Big Tom (counter-attack [go for the dick]), Francis reaction spent (Shield [Int check]) – 11, Francis takes only 1 damage [HP left: 1, SP left: 3]

Skye (move to backstab Big Tom, sword attack [Dex check]) – 10, Big Tom HP remaining: 8

Big Tom (counter-attack, hit with tail feathers) – Skye HP left: 8 (damaged reduced by 1 for Chosen armor bonus)

Round 5:

Francis (bonus action: sorry, chromatic orb spell attack [Int check, disadvantage for melee-range] – 9, Big Tom HP remaining: 2, Francis SP left: 2

Big Tom (counter-attack [go for the dick]) – Francis down, Big Tom latches onto dick again

Skye (backstab [Dex check]) – 4, swing and a miss

Big Tom (counter-attack, hit with wing) – Skye HP left: 7 (damaged reduced by 1 for Chosen armor bonus)
