Tritera : "So I've been calling you Jacub but we really need to pick a sorceress name for you to get used to"

Jessica : "Jessica, you can call me Jessica."

You say, with no real enthusiasm. You couldn't help this. But you didn't have to be excited about it. If Tritera noticed she didn't mention it.

Tritera : "it's nice to meet you Jessica. I didn't fully introduce myself earlier, it would be over kill for most mirror calls. My name is Tritera knightly, I'm one of the 13 permanent members of Brawford city council."

You suspected this was a big deal that she was downplaying and awwwed appropriately.

Tritera : "Brawford was picked as host of the wizard guild HQ for two reasons."

This too sounded like a well worn explanation but one she liked giving.

Tritera : "One, the climate is wonderful. We're on the coast and it's light robe weather all year."

You remember the winters in your home town were no joke and thought you would happily never see snow again if given the opportunity.

Tritera : "and two, we're in the middle of nowhere. After around a day's travel it's dense bog in every direction. We were founded by a madman who journeyed ten years randomly in the bog with a mirror until he found this area. As far as I know no one has come or gone from Brawford on foot since. The guild saw enormous opportunity in good land that only casters can reasonably reach."

Mirror walking was seeming like a pretty important skill and you're starting to see the wisdom of sending expensive mirrors even to out of the way villages like yours.

Tritera : "as for who actually lives here... All the prominent casters keep manors in the surrounding area but few even live in those full time and all have direct mirrors to their residences. When our relationship is good with the outside world, like it is now, it's more profitable to live amongst the common folk. So for the most part it'll just be you new casters living in the city proper along with the occasional official guild business and those of us supervising."

Jessica : "With so many strangers able to come and go is this a safe kind of place?"

Life in an isolated rural area was such that everyone knew everyone else. There were no anonymous people, least of all the few outsiders who would wander through and were never unwatched. Crime for that reason was rare and handled harshly by the families involved when it did occur. For reasons of honor, that all so precious commodity when you might rely on the good will of your neighbor for survival from time to time, the offender's family almost always counseled for harsh punishments. A place where any caster could come and go more or less anonymously at will had no such safeguards, an issue you were even more keenly aware of because you had heard tale of the bad ends that could sometimes be found by lone women in big cities.

Tritera Recognizes your fear.

Tritera : "The Guild has a court to adjudicate the obvious crimes. ****, fraud, theft and the like. There's a handy spell that can extract vivid memories that only Guild Judiciars are taught that makes most crimes fairly trivial to solve. Trust me, you do not want a Judiciar on your case. But besides cases casters are private folk by nature and you should not be afraid that you are being watched."

You were glad that crime wouldn't be a problem if Tritera was telling the truth. But you were also struck by something you didn't even know you were missing, a benefit to the relatively anonymous nature of this society. You were free from the suffocating culture of Small town life. You didn't have to worry about offending the sensibilities of neighbors who you could escape by walking out of a mirror on the other end of the realm. You could be anyone you wanted to be here, well anyone who is a woman it seems.
