“What does she mean it’s hard to unlock? I got in on my first day.” You admit to Courtney.
“WHAT!? No fucking way!” Courtney shouts in reaction, punching you lightly in the chest in disbelief.
“OW! What!? I’m just saying what happened!” You tell her, rubbing your pec that got punched.
“What do you mean you got it in a day!? You unlocked it without maxing anybody!?” Courtney asks.
“No. I got Stella’s affection maxed on my first day.” You answer.
“In a day!? How’s that even possible!?” Courtney asks in disbelief.
“I don’t know what to tell you. That’s just what happened.” You explain to her.
“Who’s this Stella girl again?” Courtney then asks.
“She’s my daughter, Courtney. You’ve been around her enough for me to know you’re just trying to be an asshole with that question.” You call Courtney out.
“That’s bullshit! I haven’t even come close to doing that with Chad. And I fuck him!” Courtney says in reaction, before realizing something and punching you once again in the chest… but not lightly this time.
“YOU’RE FUCKING GROSS, DUDE!” Courtney shouts at you. “And you have the balls to call me the asshole!?” Courtney calls you out.
“It’s not what you think!” You try to weakly defend yourself.
“How can you possibly defend fucking your own daughter!?” Courtney shouts at you.
‘She wanted me to.’ pops up in your mind, but you immediately stop yourself from uttering those words since even you know it’s not a valid excuse.
“I can’t.” You tell her, conceding there’s no winning that argument. Something Courtney told you about Lainey already being so used to things going her way thanks to her traits suddenly comes back to haunt you.
“Of all the fucking traits to buy for yourself. You fucking creep!” Courtney says in judgmental disappointment.
“I deserve that.” You tell her.
“Not even gonna deny it you… you… daughter…fucker? Holy shit! Is that how that works?” Courtney tries to insult you, before realizing something again in the midst of it.
“How does ‘what’ work?” You ask.
“Whatever that trait you bought so you can live out your sick and twisted Alabaman dreams!” Courtney answers. “People still call you a daughterfucker! Shit, I call you a daughterfucker! I knew it was weird. But… what? The app just made us not care?” Courtney asks. You’re not particularly sure why she’s interested in that particular detail, but you answer her as honestly as you can anyway.
“I had that discussion with the girls actually. When I told them it was magic why they thought that, they had a harder time believing the concept of magic than the fact that I was having an incestuous relationship with my daughter. From how I remember it, they just accept that I can have that kind of relationship with her like it was a fact of life. Pretty sure it was Viv who said, ‘I don’t question the sky being blue because it just is.’ or something to that effect.” You tell her.
“Huh.” Courtney says, a lot calmer now. “So it just makes it… normal?” Courtney asks, genuinely curious.
“That’s actually the name of the trait, ‘Normalized ****’.” You tell her.
“You sick fuck! It was already named that and you still bought it.” Courtney insults you again.
“Again, I have no excuse.” You tell her, and your constant concession pisses Courtney off more.
“What the fuck is wrong with you!? How could you even think of doing that to your own daughter!? Don’t you have any fucking shame!?” Courtney calls you out.
“I did… initially. The way it affected my relationship with my daughter wasn’t what I intended. I didn’t buy it for her. But, being completely honest, in the long run… it turned out for the better… for the both of us. So I have no regrets about it now.” You admit to Courtney.
“Good.” Courtney surprisingly says, and you can only look at her in confusion.
“I would’ve hit you again if you told me you’re a pussy who can’t even live with their decisions. I fucking hate those people.” Courtney admits, her attitude towards you doing a complete one-eighty after your answer.
“I’m surprised you came around to accepting it so quickly. Are you sure the magic isn’t affecting you?” You ask half-jokingly, but very much weirded out by Courtney’s immediate turn.
“Other people have done what you’ve done without magic. And they did it without a care for consequences. Whether the daughter they were doing it to would be haunted and guilt-ridden for the rest of her life. For wanting it even when she knew it was wrong.” Courtney explains, and it doesn’t escape your notice that her scenario went from general to a bit more specific towards the end.
“It doesn’t mean you’re not a grooming-daughterfucking-perverted-asshole-creep…” Courtney reminds you, and despite the words definitely being insults, she didn’t say them like they were meant to be insulting.
“But at least your daughter doesn’t think that.” Courtney adds, while she has a thousand yard stare into the void. You can only think the worst when you connect the dots about her past traumas and how she’s speaking now.
“Courtney, I…” You try to say again, but you stop yourself since you know Courtney’s just going to say she doesn’t need your pity. Instead, you just put a hand on her shoulder supportively. Surprisingly, she doesn’t brush it off, and just lets it stay there.
Now that you have a clearer picture of what Courtney went through, and how your time with her reminded her of her past trauma, you’re even more surprised that she’s brushed off your relationship with Stella so quickly. Shouldn’t she hate you even more for surrendering to your base desires?
But then it hits you.
She said she’s guilt-ridden for wanting it.
“Can you buy it for me?” Courtney asks you suddenly. What takes you more by surprise is that it wasn’t her ordering you around or forcing you to do it. She asked nicely.
“What?” You ask for clarification.
“That **** trait.” Courney answers. “Buy it for me.” She says, probably catching what she sounded like initially, and she says this as more of an order than a request now.
“Courtney…” You try to explain how it won’t work for her the way she intends, but she cuts you off again.
“Do this for me and you and I are square.” Courtney adds.
“That’s manipulative and you know that.” You call her out.
“Just fucking do it.” She says more forcefully.
“I wouldn’t even if I could.” You tell her, and the look she gives you sends chills down your spine, but you push through with explaining why your answer is the way it is.
“One, I can’t buy it for you since I can’t access your profile. Two, even if I could buy it for you, it wouldn’t work on you, Courtney. I have the trait and it has no effect on me. I know how weird my relationship with my daughter is. I openly admit that I’m a creepy grooming perverted Alabaman daughterfucker like you call me out to be. But I’ve learned to live with that curse of knowing I’m doing something wrong. Because whatever I have with my daughter makes her happy… and she makes me happy.” You admit to Courtney, and Courtney looks like she’s holding back her frustration. Her eyes are filled with anger, but also a sadness that you can’t even begin to describe.
“It’s not gonna magically make you accept that **** is normal like it will to non-users. It doesn’t work on us like that. So having that trait won’t get rid of whatever mental scars you already have.” You explain to Courtney.
“Then this fucking app is useless then.” Courtney concludes, not just in disappointment, but something more. Defeat? Hopelessness? You can’t exactly place it, but you understand where it’s coming from.
“I’d have bought a trait that would have freed me from all my other mental hang ups if I could. But I’ve never seen anything close to something like that. Whatever healing you need to do, or that still needs to be done, the app can only help. But it can’t get rid of it for you.” You tell her, only realizing that fact just as you were saying it, even being reminded of the ‘Supportive Family’ trait that you bought the O’Briens. They still had to heal on their own for it to have worked like it did.
“You’re not just lying to me so you won’t spend your precious fucking points are you?” Courtney asks.
“I guess that’s reason number three why I won’t buy you the trait even if I could.” You then tell her.
“I need all the points I can get right now.”
