Veronica knew she had to please Elizabeth's consort, who had arrived accompanied by an escort of some of her Childer and some Hybrid servants loyal to the cause. She was fully aware that Jessica was in charge of eliminating anyone who opposed Elizabeth. Veronica was amazed to observe Jessica, whose cruel nature was palpable. It was strange to imagine that she had once been human, for now she looked at everyone as if she were ready to devour them—Vampires and Hybrids alike. It seemed that one of the Hybrids, in particular, was Jessica's favorite, a young-looking black woman with savagery and bloodlust in her eyes, but also blind devotion to her "master." The entourage was made up only of women who wore beautiful dresses, designed to highlight their features in a sensual way. However, Jessica's red dress was an invitation to sin, with a daring neckline that barely hid her breasts and a fabric that felt like a second skin. Veronica let herself be carried away for a moment, fascinated by her beauty; after all, Jessica was an irresistible predator.

The atmosphere was charged with tension and power, and Veronica knew she needed to find her own strength to not let herself submit to such oppression and seduction.
