She sips from her drink and I lean back in my chair. Finally I open up and tell her my name, to which she gives me her name in return. Then ponders for a moment in the kind of easy silence I could get used to.
"You know it could get crazier," she says, "Where did you grow up? Go to college?"
"You think we've been shadowing each other our whole life?"
"No I think it's possible you've been stalking me. I mean my life is pretty enviable."
"Sure seems like it to me," I reply, mixed emotions crossing my face.
I'm still the same person in this fantasy. Still have the same history, the same life, the same baggage. Which means one thing.
"Oh yeah," she replies, "Charmed."
"I mean I don't want to presume," I say calm and kind and a little sad, "But you're out for your birthday surrounded by friends. Friends who are dedicated to making sure you have a good time. To being protective, maybe to a fault."
I gesture with my head towards the one who interrupted us earlier, eliciting another chuckle from the birthday girl.
"Yeah," she says, "They are pretty great. Maybe a bit overprotective."
"That's better than the alternative in my mind." I reply, shrugging.
She raises an eyebrow, "You think so?"
"Well," I point out, trying not to let it land too heavily, "Do you see any friends here with me?"
She stops, freezing in the middle of whatever thought she has while she processes the fact that I'm here alone. Before it can weigh to heavily on her I hold up my hand, smiling kindly.
"It's okay, really. I mean without being alone I probably wouldn't have wound up finding out about our coincidence. And I too do wonder whether there is more."
But there isn't, not for a while. We didn't go to the same college. She grew up in a city and me in the country. Nothing else lined up until we found out that...
"Really?" she says.
"Yeah," I smile back, "My folks were in town for a music festival when my mom went into labor. Hours away from home they had to rush to the hospital and so I was born there."
"So was I?" she exclaims, "Same reason too. Travelled for the festival and went into labor early. God, I wonder if it was the same festival?"
"Had to be," I shrug, "I mean how many festivals go on in one city on the same day. Couldn't be anything but that. And hey, that probably means we were born at most a couple hours apart."
"Right next to each other," she says, "Well in different rooms, hopefully."
"I'd imagine so," I smile slowly.
She shakes her head in wonder and admiration, "To think after all this time. Born in the same place, on the same day, at the same time. Only to wind up in this bar by chance on our birthdays and meeting each other for the first time."
"It's a crazy coincidence," I acknowledge.
"Is it?" she asks, "Is that all it is?"
