She raises her eyebrow, speaking slowly and clearly doubting me and little wonder. The girl has endured all manner of faux happy birthdays that are actually just lame attempts at pick up lines. While mine is probably the oddest one she's got yet, it'd be frankly weird if she didn't see it as a pick up.

"It's the truth," I say quickly, "I mean I can pull out my ID and prove it to you if you'd like..."

She laughs, waving me off, "No need. I believe you. And Happy Birthday to you too. Tell you what, why don't you have a seat and then the next complimentary drink I get I'll just slide over the table to you."

"Appreciate it, but it's really not necessary. I'll take the seat though, if you don't mind."

"Not at all," she says, and I slide into the seat as smoothly as I can.

My presence at the table immediately draws the attention of one of her friends who holds a 'one-minute finger' up to the guy who is chatting her up and turns to intercept. I guess I don't meet the high standards that she's set for the birthday girl, but as she turns and opens her mouth to address me the birthday girl notices my glance and interrupts her.

"It's his birthday too!" she says, almost believably excited.

Her friend raises a skeptical eyebrow and looks at the birthday girl as if she can't really be buying this, "Sure he is."

Shifting in my seat I pull out my wallet and draw my ID out of it.

"Same offer I gave to her still stands," I remark, sliding the ID across the table, "For your perusal?"

Still skeptical her friend slides the ID up and her eyes go a little wide, "Oh shit it is. Same year as you too. Unless this ID is fake."

"Yeah," I remark sarcastically, "You've got me. I carry around a whole stack of 365 fake IDs just in case I happen to be in a bar that someone is having a birthday in, because this is the best pick up line I can come up with. Is it working on you?"

The last bit, the question, aimed at the birthday girl who laughs suddenly and to her own surprise. To the point where she snorts and then goes a little red and covers her mouth.

Fuck she's cute.

Petite and apparently older than she looks, since to me she looks at least a decade younger than me but apparently we were born on the same year. Hair cut into a fresh pixie cut that frames her round face and big eyes, so big you could lose yourself in them.

Pouty lips. Button nose. Dimples that show up when she smiles.

The quintissential girl next door.

Scowling at me for lightly making a fool of her, the birthday girls friend slides my ID back and haughtily turns her back to me, returning to her solicitor. I slip the ID back into my wallet and my wallet back into my pocket as the birthday girl chirps up.

"Same year," she says, shaking her head, "Does that mean double birthday greetings?"

"I mean sure. Happy Birthday again."

"And a Happy Birthday to you too."
