Chapter 22

Zebra
It's time to get inside the ominous fortress... What awaits you next?
The real world...
As adrenaline courses through your veins, you turn back to Vylorun and whisper urgently, "We need to find an entry point. We can't just stand here any longer." You both scan the perimeter of Fort Kampbell, looking for signs of weakness or hidden doors. After several tense minutes, Vylorun spots something - a small metal flap slightly recessed into one corner of the structure. It seems like it might lead underground, which could provide cover as you make your way deeper into the fortress.
With caution still paramount, you approach the concealed entrance together. As you reach out to touch the cold metal handle, noticing the word 'Coal' was embossed into the cast iron of the ancient flap door. You know from reading history books that some old buildings had once burned Coal in their furnaces or boilers for heat and steam power. Plainly the ancient building predated the war by centuries… but what if this secret passageway led directly under the Redoubt? Could Daniel be held captive below ground level? The thought sends shivers down your spine.
Taking a deep breath, you slowly open the hatch, peering into the darkness for a moment. Trading fearful glances with Vylorun you slip through, sliding down a cold metal shoot into a dark empty coal bin. To your relief, there are no immediate threats lurking within the dark forgotten room. With Vylorun following closely behind, you descend into the darkness, the Rabbit morph cracking a glow stick to light the way. It fills the long forgotten room with sickly green light… as you hope against hope that this leads you closer to finding your father…
As you continue to descend into the dark, musty tunnel, your heart races with anticipation and fear. The sickly green glow illuminates the walls covered in ancient graffiti, remnants of past occupants who had sought shelter in this forgotten place. The air is heavy with dust and the faint smell of coal, making it difficult to breathe.
You and Vylorun move cautiously, your footsteps echoing through the empty tunnels. Every so often, you stop to listen for any signs of life or movement, straining your ears against the deafening silence. Your hands are steady, gripping your weapon tightly as you navigate through the maze of tunnels.
Suddenly, Vylorun raises a hand, signaling for you to stop. He points to a narrow passageway off to the left, which appears to be hidden by a loose stone. The two of you approach it carefully, ready to face whatever lies ahead. You can't help but feel a knot forming in your stomach, knowing that you're getting closer to finding your father, or possibly facing danger.
With bated breath, you push aside the loose stone, revealing the concealed entrance to another part of the tunnel system. As you both enter, the Rabbit morph uses his glowing stick to light up the path before you - an eerie sight indeed. This new section seems more recent than the last; there were no traces of ancient graffiti here, only scuff marks on the walls from hurried feet. It was clear this place had been used recently and not just during wartime.
You continue deeper into these newer passages until finally, after what feels like hours, you hear voices echoing down one particular corridor. They sound distant yet familiar… could they belong to Daniel? Your heart leaps with hope as adrenaline courses through your veins once again. Vylorun raises his weapon, signaling for you to do the same. With caution still paramount, you move towards the source of those voices, determined to save your father at any cost. At last the tunnel ends at a set of stairs leading up into the massive fortress, with only one patch forwards you leave your glow stick behind and climb the step upwards. Coming out into a room within the wall, carefully you sneak to the door checking the halls. Before going out into the long hallway... making your way along slowly until you step out into a new room. Suddenly you are surrounded by guards, realizing there is no way to win a shoot out. You and Vylotun are **** to surrender, and are quickly tied up and dragged in front of the raider leader. The man sitting on the throne is covered in old world military armor, his face bearded and battered it takes you a long moment to recognize him... "DAD!"
Your heart drops as you realize the man in the throne is indeed your father, the raider leader. The shock and disbelief are overwhelming, but you must stay composed. You look at Vylorun with a mix of anger and disappointment, wondering how your father could be involved in such a life of ****.
Your father stares at you in shock for a long while, taking in the changes that you have gone through from your time in the wastelands. You were expecting the look of shock and even disappointment, but the other look of amusement and intense interest sickens and repulses you. "Jerome... I knew you would be the first one out of the bunker." He snorts still trying to take in the sight of you, speaking again his voice more husky now. "I had to survive, son, we all have to survive. This world has become a cruel place, and I had to make alliances and hard decisions to protect myself and my people. The time for hiding and living alone in bunkers is over, we must all survive in this new world. But I can see you have been doing some living, not the way I would have expected it seems..."
You can't help but feel conflicted, but you know that your father needs to see the error of his ways. "We need to leave, Dad. There's more to life than just surviving. We can make a difference, we can help people."
Your father considers your words for a moment, a look of surprise in his eyes that you didn't understand. "But that is what I'm doing here, I didn't like it... but I had to destroy Muktree village. To take away the trading partners, to make those old fools in charge of the bunker see... they have to live in the real world now!"
The continuation of the dialogue is shocking...
