He waited a short while, until Marco came down the stairs, passing the guards. He gave Varga a nod.
“Did you have fun with Luna?” Marco asked.
“Oh yes, your **** is amazing.”
“As is yours.” Marco gave Varga a suspicious glance, he leant in close enough for nobody else to hear. “I don’t know what you and Selena are up to, but keep me out of it.”
Varga returned the comment with a single nod, and Marco returned to the party.
A few other family members and slaves came and went, some Varga didn’t know the names of.
A long while passed, then he heard the click of heels descending from the stairs. As the sound rounded the corner, Giuliette walked down, carrying a sack in one hand, the shape of the tiara inside it. She held the leash of a hooded **** behind her. Varga recognised the body. It was Selena.
Giuliette smirked at Varga as she headed into the ballroom. His hands shook with nerves as he watched them go by. There was no way he could make a scene in here. But where would she take Selena? She must’ve got the orb and sceptre hidden elsewhere. He had to follow them.
But he had to arm himself first.
He headed down to the armoury; as a captain, he had access, and it didn’t look suspicious either. There was no time for armour, but he had a short sword on his belt, a crossbow and shield. It’d be a tough fight against a mage, but it was the best he could do right now.
Back up the stairs, Daniella paused and gave him a curious glance as he passed by with the shield on his arm.
“Duty calls,” he said.
He skirted the walls of the ballroom, trying to blend in and not attract attention as he watched the guests grope Selena as Giuliette stood and watched. After a while, she tugged the leash and they moved on outside.
They headed up the stairs to the city’s upper battlement walkway. That would take they all the way to the House of Mages. Varga had to stop them before Giuliette could get there.
He hid around the corner as Giuliette dragged Selena up the stairs. Once they were all the way up, Varga hurried behind them. The battlement walkway would be the best place to attack. There would be less people to get involved up here. If anyone was to see him attack, with Giuliette’s status as the fiancée of the heir of House Reyes, they would come to her aid, rather than his.
As Varga hurried up the stairs after them, he could hear Giuliette’s cruel laughter, and Selena’s muffled groans. He gripped the crossbow tightly, his heart pounding with determination.
They rounded the corner. It was time to make his move.
He moved to the side of the path to ensure he didn’t hit Selena by mistake, he aimed low, pulling the trigger of the crossbow and the bolt fired.
It thudded into the back of Giuliette’s calf, and she stumbled forwards. Selena fell too, as did the sack containing the tiara.
