Chapter 16 by Trom1806 Trom1806

So what will happen next?

You organize the peasant militia of this village for defense.

Over the next couple of hours, you are busy leading the peasant militia: you explain to them how to act in battle, what places are best for defense, where to set barricades or traps.

Innkeeper Durlen helps you. Thanks to his authority, material capabilities and knowledge, the peasant militia manages to relatively quickly barricade all the entrances to the inn. They also equipped several positions for archers on the roof of the inn (wooden barricades for cover and a couple of barrels with arrows) - using the stairs in one of the interior rooms of the building you can climb into the attic of the inn and then climb out onto the roof.

You see how a dozen peasant militias, armed with bows, have already taken these positions on the roof of the inn.

You continue to instruct militias who only have melee weapons.

You look into the faces of these simple peasant guys. Many of these faces are simply the faces of very scared people. There are faces expressing apathy and doom. There are persons who express anger and a desire for **** (probably these are persons who, due to attacks by monsters, have lost one of their relatives).

There are a small number of persons who are not afraid and who even show anticipation of the upcoming battle in their eyes. These persons are young peasant guys, about 18 or 19 years old. They just don't realize the scale of the threat... They probably think they can easily defeat the wolves and all sorts of evil forest monsters that have been attacking the villagers for the past few months.

These young guys think that they will become heroes.

Young idiots...

Once upon a time you were the same young idiot. You dreamed of the glory of a hero conquering monsters. Did you once think that the life of such a hero consists only of fame, honors, pleasures and wealth.

However, when your dream came true and you became a professional monster hunter, you realized that there were more important aspects to the life of such a “hero”. These aspects are not glory. Not wealth. Not a crowd of young and beautiful girls, each of whom is ready to satisfy any sexual whim of the hero.

There are more important aspects to a hero's life.

For example…

Fear of D E A T H.

Constant fear of D E A T H. Fear that the hero has no right to show. A hero should inspire people. He must organize resistance to the forces of evil. And, therefore, he must keep his emotions under strict control.

You are very scared right now. You don't want to die. Life is a much more important wealth than gold. You understand the scale of the threat. Wolves, satyrs, werewolf, imp, traitors within the village (what if Meribela was not the only traitor?) - all these facts irrefutably indicate that the enemy forces will be numerous. The power of these forces... is unpredictably high.

Chances are high that this will be your last assignment. You may simply die in an unequal battle.

However, you don't show your emotions. You strictly and demandingly give instructions to the peasant militias. Your entire appearance and even the tone of your voice - all this demonstrates to an external observer your unshakable confidence and the inflexibility of your will.

You look into the eyes of young peasant guys who probably only know how to chop wood, grow cabbage and herd sheep. You realize that many of these guys are going to die soon. It is even possible that all the inhabitants of this village will die...

You tell them: “No single attacks! Stay in groups! Try to lure your enemies into traps! Take cover behind the barricades and try to attack with long spears or something similar! Do any of you not have copies? At least find a pitchfork!”

After a while you notice smoke. Something is burning in the north of the village. You guess that it is the house of the traitor Meribela that is burning. Your order has been completed. All the unholy altars are destroyed and the house of Meribela itself is in flames.

However, instead of satisfaction, you feel something else.

You anticipate the imminent onset of consequences.

So what happens next?
