Chapter 10 by Zaofan Zaofan

What's next?

(Tobias POV) Verse 9 - Days with Powers Pt 2

Nubia watched on from the distance whilst a strange muscular man gingerly made his way down the street. Every so often he would stop and turn towards her, which was beginning to annoy her a little even though she couldn’t blame him for being doubtful of the promises they had both made.. She had made a promise that she would deal with the dead body problem, but he would owe her a favour in the near distant future. Of course Tobias felt the proposal was way too good to be true, but Nubia insisted in her word.

“It’s not like this is the first clean up job. And fufufu it doesn’t look like it’ll be my last.” Her eyes remained locked onto the fading figure of the boy. But her mind had drifted somewhere else. Only she understood the importance of this meeting between them both. “Simon…have you finally found a worthy host this time? If so…then I guess things are about to get fun.”

Tobias

I felt as though a heavy weight had been removed off my shoulders. I was still lost in my own thoughts from time to time, but I wasn’t nowhere near as panicky as I was this morning. The further problems I was set to face were all in regards to dealing with my step father’s disappearance. Although being able to morph into his likeness would help the situation somewhat, I was fully aware that this method could not be sustainable. Especially since that now I had unlocked my powers I knew I was destined to move to Metro City at some point. Only I wasn’t just going to leave her without making sure she would be well on her own. Now at this point I admittedly wasn’t exactly sure what her doing well would look like. But I was determined more than ever to use my powers to change things around here.

On my way back home I was hoping to at least shed away some of this anxiety still lingering in my heart. But of course, life enjoyed throwing curved balls just when you thought you had successfully avoided the first stray throws. Bearing in my mind since I didn’t pack any change of clothes I was **** to return home in Greggs form. Which wasn’t a bad thing considering that 25% buff made me feel more superhuman and less, asshole.

Along the way I took a detour towards some of the rural and greener outskirts in order to test myself a little. Whether this was seeing how high I could jump, run or if I was strong enough to uproot a tree away from its roots. The results were pretty much within my expectations, and whilst my 25% buff didn’t give me the level of strength I had seen Marvels online exhibit. It was more than enough to be considered at the apex of the food chain amongst mortals and possibly every kind of wild animal.

A few hours passed and the late evening was dutifully arriving. I felt consumed within my own mind again, formulating ideas and different possibilities into how to handle all these changes around me. Despite my less then care towards normal schooling, I definitely soaked myself in the knowledge of all things Marvel related, and could proudly say I had an extensive understanding about that world.

I felt a rouge wind passing through me, carrying with it a hoarse burning smell wafting into my nostrils. Something was burning? I could recognize that smell from a mile away. My brows furrowed whilst I placed a searching gaze towards the azure skies above, very quickly I noticed a near distant pitch of black smoke rising into the air from a few streets away from where I was. I seemed to have inherited this strange need of rushing towards danger whilst I had morphed. I swiftly made haste and bolted down the street, towards the rising smoke.

Once I finally arrived at the foot of the scene. I met a small two-story floor appliance store covered in black smog whilst rousing fire was slowly rising towards the heavens.

Many people had gathered and watched on with shared horror from a safe distance. However, I felt this troubled feeling whilst in inspected the scene, my eyes suddenly flashed open as I noticed a small car parked dangerously close to the appliance store, I might’ve missed it since the thick smog had wrapped itself around the entire a few miter radius around the store.

What was even more chilling about the scene was the tiny hands I saw repeatedly hitting the window from the inside. My instincts kicked in and I dashed with an unheard-of speed towards the car. I took hold of the latch against the door and pulled it open, the car door tore open much to my surprise and sheer delight, but I held no room to admire my work. I flung the door aside and stuck my head into the car. There was a couple, passed out from the heavy fumes. In the backseat I noticed a disheveled todler strapped securely in her carseat. My heart instantly pains, but im glad she’s still awake and safe. I waste no time and easily pull apart the seatbelts like flimsy pieces of string, freeing the couple.

I move to the backseat and pulled the seatbeat away from the toddlers seat until they slacked out of place. I lifted her into my arms and carried her out. I ran towards the nearby crowd and placed her in the nearest persons hand. Then I whizzed back again and pulled the **** couple free, placing one of them on my shoulder before dashing back to a safe distant. My timing couldn’t have been any better as I soon felt a tremor before the sound of an explosion filled the air. The flames bolted like rockets into the skies. The nearby onlookers filled with screams of terror as they smartly created more distance between them and the scene.

Fuck! That was way too close! Although I felt this body brimming with power, inwardly I was shaken to my bones by how close I was with that final blast.

I waited for the dust to settle before I allowed my shoulders to relax. I started to wonder if I copied a marvels power, just how much power would I have control of? 25% buff to a regular human already made me feel like the strongest within the entire world. I played with the idea of just how far I could go with this power alone. Yet alone there were other 3 abilities that I had yet experienced yet, that this ability ‘Lucky Simon.’ afforded to me.

Lost in my own day dreams. I had completely forgotten where I was until I heard a chorus of cheers and applause raining down.

“W-WELL DONE!”

“WOOOOO OUR HERO!”

“I KNOW HIM-HE'S...HE’S, MY NEIGHBOUR!”

“YOU SAVED THEIR LIVES THANK YOU-THANK YOU SO MUCH”

What the...why are they...my thoughts were cut short by my searching gaze catching the sight of that little girl covered in soot with messy hair. Her bright round eyes blinked with curiosity whilst she beheld me with such innocence, my heart melted at the sight of her glad she was safe. Whilst the people on the scene tended to her, she gave me a thumbs up with a childish grin to match. You would think she would be shaken up by the events, but her calm demeanor was admirable. She even gave me a little boost of confidence within myself. After I awkwardly shook a few peoples hands and refused pictures. I swiftly made my escape down the nearest dark alley.

“Phew!” being recognized as a hero is all good and all, but how can you get used to that stuff. I never really wanted to see my name in lights like most people, I merely wanted enough power to protect my loved ones and live the life I wanted. Oh, and of course have access to all the pretty women I could have. I heard some Marvels had multiple girlfriends which was right up my list of things I willed to accomplish.

“H-hey that’s enough l-let her go” I heard a voice say

“Yeah come on it’s getting pretty violent now” said another

“No fuck that! This bitch needs to understand she isn't the boss of this gang. I am! And she's just a stuck-up bitch that needs to do what she's told!”

Why does that rough sounding voice sound annoyingly familiar? I quickened my footsteps down the alleyway until I eventually reached the other side. I found a small clearing with dumpsters aligned against a tall wall. There was a half-torn iron fence with a girl sat on her knees with her back against it., surrounded by three leather jacket wearing youths. The moment I caught the sight of their faces, I felt a sudden rush of anxiety swell inside of me.

Oh crap its them again...i need to get out of here. I twisted on my heels prepared to pretend I was never here but then a thought appeared within me.

Wait why am I running. I took a look at my large hands covered in soot from the smoke and the dirt staining my tight shirt. Hehe I'm currently not the same Tobias I was before. I took another look at the tense scene unfolding before me, it was obvious that the punk looking girl was being bullied. I kind of felt she deserved whatever was coming her way, but then a rouge thought appeared again. Almost as though my mind split itself into two distinctive paths.

Do I stick up for her, show those punks who the boss is and leave it at that.

Or

Do I let things spiral a little more out of control, swoop in at the right time and let's say...demand a reward from her. Hehehe

Hero's path or Villainy Path
