CULT OF THE WITHERED TREE (PART 2 OF 2) - AKI POV
Aki's eyes flutter open, his brows knit in concern as he tallies the remaining nature spirits. Two more must have succumbed while he was lost in thought, leaving only eighteen remaining. He's struck by a sense of gratitude for the cultists' rigid adherence to their rituals. They're compelled to chant and pray to their decayed god before each sacrifice, allowing several precious minutes to pass between offerings.
With a cautious scan, Aki assesses the surrounding cultists for any signs of suspicion. Finding none, he casts one final sorrowful glance toward the Nature spirits, silently conveying his regrets. He offers them a final apologetic nod before pivoting and striding purposefully toward the exit. While a couple of cultists may have noticed his departure, their inaction suggests they're preoccupied with the imminent culmination of their decade-old mission. Cordelia's enchantments augment his concealment and divert attention away from him, providing an added layer of security.
Emerging from the Welcoming Hall, Aki takes a quick inventory of the environment, his eyes searching for any lingering cultists outside. Seeing none, he deduces that they're all congregated within the hall, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their decayed god's avatar. Without hesitation, he breaks into a sprint and establishes a Telepathic Bond with Cordelia.
"Cordelia, I'm making my way back upstairs. Could you employ Commune with Nature to pinpoint the exact spot directly above the egg?" Aki's voice carries a sense of urgency.
"'Course I can," Cordelia replies. "Why?"
"Just do it now," Aki implores, urgency lacing his words. "I'll explain once I'm up there. Time is of the essence."
Aki pivots toward the staircase and ascends rapidly, each step a deliberate stride. Upon reaching the second floor, he seeks out Cordelia's distinctive aura.
"I've located it, Aki," Cordelia's mental voice resonates. Almost simultaneously, Aki spots the telltale shimmer of her aura and instinctively directs himself toward her.
He discovers them within a sprawling hallway adorned with numerous doors leading to different rooms. Cordelia crouches low, her eyes aglow with an otherworldly light as her hands stretch down as if reaching for something intangible. The soft sounds of his approach prompt Yumi and Landale to swivel their gazes in his direction.
"Perfect," Aki muses inwardly as he takes in the scene.
"What's the situation down below?" Landale inquires, his curiosity piqued.
Temporarily dismissing Landale's question, Aki focuses his attention on Cordelia. "Have you located it?"
"No," Cordelia responds in a casual tone. "I'm just enjoyin' this here carpet." She jests, mockingly caressing the aged, moldy fabric under her fingertips.
"Excellent," Aki brushes off Cordelia's sarcasm. Turning to address the group, he forges ahead. "We're running out of time. The cultists are teetering on the edge of completing their ritual. They're sacrificing nature spirits to feed the egg, and only sixteen spirits remain."
Aki's gaze shifts to Cordelia, who transitions from surprise to a stunned expression. "Cordelia, while you might not be a fighter, can you cause structural damage? Destroy buildings, perhaps?"
"No, I can't put the nature spirits at risk... Why are you... oh!" Cordelia's eyes widen as realization dawns. "I see where you're goin' with this... It's a plan, I suppose."
Sensing Cordelia's reservations, Aki holds back, affording her the space to voice her concerns. Cordelia maintains her silence, her uncertainty palpable. He understands that her hesitation could be rooted in the potential harm to the Nature spirits. However, the question that nags at him is why safeguarding them isn't more central to Cordelia's initial objectives in the first place.
Undeterred by Cordelia's reticence, Aki pushes forward. "Regardless, Landale and I will execute this strategy. Our aim is to bring down the temple onto the egg. Though it may not obliterate the egg itself, it will undoubtedly thin the cultists' ranks and neutralize the corrupted spirits. We may even eliminate the cultists wielding the sacrificial sword."
Furrowing his brow, Landale injects practicality into the conversation. "It's a solid plan, but how do we ensure our survival?"
Shifting his focus to Cordelia, Aki appeals to her trust, emphasizing their collective commitment. "Cordelia, I'm asking you to have faith in us - in me. Open the gateway to the outside again. We'll use it for our escape. I assure you, we'll return to tidy up the aftermath."
Cordelia meets Aki's gaze, her expression enigmatic.
"Otherwise, we can rely on barriers for protection," Aki suggests thoughtfully. "In my experience, simplicity often yields the best results. If us mortals have the spell barriers then…"
Cordelia interjects with a resigned tone, "I got the Barrier spell too, no doubt. I'll pop open the gateway, but it's gotta be in that same room where I first whipped it up."
"That is perfectly fine," Aki responds, foreseeing this outcome. "Then we'll encase the room in barriers."
Landale's curiosity piques, prompting him to question, "If we are leaving through the portal door anyway, What is the barrier for?"
Aki explains, his voice tinged with the air of a revelation. "It's highly unlikely we can deploy while we are outside the temple. Also it's a clever technique I've picked up. A barrier preserves its contents, even if the supporting structure vanishes. The room will remain intact."
Yumi's imaginative mind chimes in, offering a playful perspective. "So we'll have a floating master bedroom, huh?"
Aki smiles and nods, but his gaze shifts to Cordelia, catching a subtle shift in her demeanor. Her usually lively tail remains still, hinting at her inner turmoil. "Do you have an alternative strategy in mind?" he inquires.
Cordelia's response is frank. "Nah, I ain't got a different plant. Your scheme seems sturdy enough."
With a confirming nod, Aki acknowledges her decision. "Yumi, accompany Cordelia upstairs. Locate the exact spot directly above us. For now, Landale and I will place the explosive symbols. We'll regroup with you afterward."
Yumi nods at Aki, and he responds with a slight smile. Yumi starts to leave, but her departure halts when she realizes that Cordelia isn't following her.
Cordelia bites her lip and glances at Aki, her voice laced with uncertainty. "There really ain't no other way?"
Aki's reply is resolute. "Cordelia, we're facing a horde of hundreds below us. Confronting them head-on is a recipe for disaster, and time isn't on our side. This plan is our only shot."
Cordelia's jaw sets, a nod signaling her **** concurrence.
As Cordelia and Yumi set off, Aki shifts his attention to Landale. "How many symbols can you deploy?"
Landale, with a dramatic flair, raises his hands, conjuring sparks of magic. "More than you, Aki," he retorts, a smug grin accompanying his response.
The implied challenge is not lost on Aki, but he stays focused on the task at hand. Scanning the area, he plots the optimal placement for the symbols of explosion.
"Landale, put yours in those two rooms," Aki directs, pointing out the locations. "Make them potent. Cordelia's blessings will replenish our energy anyway."
Initially resistant, Landale's mouth opens to voice his protest, but seeing Aki already moving away, he refrains, casting a parting smirk before getting to work.
Entering the room, Aki takes in the scene - a bedroom, albeit smaller. Despite the decayed furnishings, a small bed and a rotting study table hint at its history as a child's space. With precision, Aki positions a symbol of explosive magic in the room's center.
Moving on to the subsequent room, he finds a variation on the theme, but a curious detail halts Aki's progress. Dim infernal markings decorate the walls, faint against the darkness. Cordelia's lingering blessings help him perceive them clearly, emphasizing their design. The markings do not seem recent; instead, they're arranged in an aesthetically pleasing pattern.
Aki suppresses his intrigue, his mission taking precedence. He completes the placement of symbols, sparing a final look at the room before leaving, remembering it's contents as a gut feeling tells him it might be important.
Landale waits outside, his impatience manifest in a tapping foot. Aki addresses him, resolved. "Let's proceed."
Their synchronized sprint kicks off, but what starts as a routine ascent upstairs takes an unexpected twist when Landale bolts past Aki. Landale's triumphant smirk and the condescending look he shoots Aki's way can't be ignored. Aki's lips involuntarily twitch, igniting a spark of competitiveness within him. In that instant, the challenge is set.
Aki answers with newfound determination, his muscles surging with energy as he accelerates. The thrill of competition propels him forward, his heart pounding in sync with his footsteps. Landale's expression shifts from smug confidence to startled surprise as the sound of Aki's pursuit reaches his ears. Nevertheless, he maintains his lead.
As they round a bend, the corridor stretches out ahead. Fortuitously, Landale, lost in his haste, continues down the path without a pause, the grand staircase to the third floor just out of sight. Aki seizes the chance, realizing Landale's oversight, and surges forward with a burst of speed. Triumph courses through Aki's veins as he claims the lead, bounding up the steps with exhilaration.
Yet, Aki's triumph is short-lived. A muffled exclamation from below pierces the air, signaling that Landale has caught his mistake. The race reignites, fierce as a tempestuous sea, as Landale rallies with newfound determination to recover his momentary lapse.
Guided by Cordelia's ethereal presence, Aki charges onward. His arrival on the third floor is marked by heaving breaths and a victorious gleam in his eyes. He's a blend of exhaustion and exhilaration, fueled by the joy of competition. Landale joins him shortly after, breathing heavily but clearly annoyed—an observation that secretly pleases Aki, underscoring the intensity of their rivalry.
Yumi and Cordelia stand before them, expressions marked by incredulity. Yumi's tone mingles amusement with disbelief as she vocalizes the unspoken question hanging in the air. "Wait a sec, were you two knuckleheads... having a race?"
Taken aback for a moment, Aki wipes the triumphant grin from his face, subtly signaling to Landale to proceed with placing his arcane symbols. While Landale does complies, his annoyance in losing is palpable in his movements.
"Are we all set to rock and roll?" Cordelia queries, her gaze shifting between the trio.
In the master bedroom, the bathroom door has returned to its role as a portal to the forest. Azzle hesitates, peering into the doorway with a blend of curiosity and caution. Meanwhile, Aki is engrossed in reinforcing the barriers Cordelia had established, subtly extending their protective embrace beyond the room's walls and floor.
"Hey, goblin, come on in," Landale invites with a wave. "It's safe."
Azzle inches forward, his head crossing the threshold. His immediate reaction is a muffled exclamation. "What in the wyrm's whim-?" His voice is distorted, his goblin features twisted in frustration as if an unseen **** is compressing his face.
Cordelia's retort is sharp. "Told ya the goblin can't tag along!"
Yumi's inquiry follows, laced with curiosity. "Why's that? This place is has enough corruption that the goblin's presence should fit right in. No offense." She adds looking at Azzle.
"It's the egg's defenses," Cordelia answers, her tone final, shutting down further discussion.
Having already pondered the same question, Aki doesn't push Cordelia for more details, understanding her **** to share. Instead, he adds the finishing touches to Cordelia's formidable barrier. Upon inspection, it's a complete enclosure - walls, floorboards, and even the ceiling enveloped by the protective shield.
"All set," Aki announces, turning his attention to Azzle, who's now exerting his utmost effort to enter the room. "Hold off for a bit, Azzle. You'll get your chance once we shatter the egg."
"Outta the way, goblin," Cordelia orders. "We're makin' our exit."
Azzle promptly moves out of the way as Yumi and Cordelia step outside into the forest. As she takes her first breath of fresh air, Yumi exhales a grateful sigh. Inside, Aki and Landale linger momentarily, their poised hands ready to execute their plan.
"Cordelia, give us the signal," Aki instructs.
Cordelia shuts her eyes for a beat, seemingly gathering her thoughts. Without opening them, she directs, "Hit it."
Aki and Landale snap their fingers in unison, setting their scheme into motion.
The air quakes with the thunderous reverberations of colossal explosions, their shockwaves resonating through the very timbers of the temple. In an instant, the ground itself seems to rebel, sending ripples of instability beneath Aki and Landale's feet. Aki's reflexes surge to life, he reaches out and grips tight around Landale's arm, poised to launch him through the portal should the conjured barriers falter under the relentless ****.
The cataclysmic eruptions eventually yield but the tremors persist, as if the very earth still trembles in the aftermath. With measured steps, Aki approaches the door leading to the hallway. The protective barrier guarding the room shimmers like the mirage of a mirage, yielding reluctantly as the door creaks open.
The temple has undergone a violent metamorphosis, now reduced to a panorama of ruin. The chamber they occupy hovers high above the ground, suspended in the firmament, its remaining walls fractured and breached by the onslaught. Sunlight pierces the shattered façade, casting a surreal illumination upon the scene.
Aki's gaze scans the chaotic scene, his instinctual search ending abruptly. There, upon the altar, lies the unholy egg, safely encircled by spirits and cultists who are rousing from their disoriented stupor. In close proximity to the egg, the ritual sword pulses with malevolence, its darkness an insatiable hunger that resonates within Aki's very core. A shiver races down his spine as he observes multiple cultists advancing toward the sentient blade.
"They mean to complete the ritual!"
In the brief instant between revelation and action, Aki swiftly casts Feather Fall upon himself and launches into a controlled descent. Yumi's voice echoes behind him, "Aki!?"
His plummet through the air transforms into a calculated ballet, his mind racing as he tallies their dwindling foes. It's undeniable: over half have been buried beneath the rubble, their potential to wreak havoc forever quelled. Yet, despair grips his heart, for not a single nature spirit has emerged unscathed. Amidst the chaos, one cultist spots his descent and releases an indignant roar, fingers accusatorily pointing towards the heavens.
Aki's boots find purchase amidst the rubble, his landing softened by the Feather Fall's enchantment. For a fleeting moment, adversaries and hero lock eyes across the debris that separates them. In that charged silence, an unspoken understanding forms, before the tempest of combat swallows them whole.
With his blade gleaming, Aki conjures spells to life, arcane missiles slashing through the air and finding their mark within three cultists. Their agonized screams pierce the tumultuous atmosphere as the magical onslaught tears through flesh and bone.
Aki's focus hones in, and with a calculated maneuver, he adeptly sidesteps a cultist's swinging blade, deftly avoiding the impending threat. However, instead of launching a counterattack, Aki's outstretched hand points skyward, his fingers tracing arcane patterns through the air. The cultist's curiosity sparks in his eyes as he tries to decipher Aki's intentions. The cultist's gaze follows Aki's direction, searching for the source of his magic.
Suddenly, realization dawns on the cultist's face, his eyes widening in horror as he comprehends what Aki has set in motion. From above, Yumi descends with swift precision, her mace transformed into a lethal instrument of vengeance. The cultist's momentary curiosity transforms into a chilling realization, but it's too late.
With a resounding thud that's muffled by the sorcerous embrace of Feather Fall, Yumi lands on the cultist. Her mace collides with his skull in a sickening crescendo of brutality. Bone and sinew yield to the unforgiving ****, and an unsettling squelch fills the air as the cultist's head sinks into his own torso.
Upon her landing, Yumi's feet touch the ground with grace. Aki's command reverberates in the air, infusing their every move: "Annihilate them all. Cordelia will deal with the egg."
A fierce nod from Yumi seals their pact, and together they cut through the enemy lines, carving a path toward the altar. Above, Landale unleashes his destructive spells from the open doorway, conjuring torrents of magic missiles that find their mark with satisfying precision. Curses and cackles intertwine, woven into an incantation of chaos that fortifies their resistance. Cordelia hovers above, a beacon of benevolence, her bestowed boons reigniting their determination in the face of overwhelming darkness.
Yet, the theater of battle remains their realm, and Aki's attention swiftly returns to the fray. The ebb and flow of combat guide his steps, a fluid dance amidst the chaos. He sidesteps an enemy's thrust and, with a decisive twist, drives his blade into the cultist's skull.
"Aki!" Yumi's voice rings with an urgency born of desperation, her fingers pointing towards the altar.
Swiftly pivoting, Aki follows her gaze. Near the altar, a cultist rises, his hood fallen to reveal blazing red hair. "Cordelia!" the cultist's enraged bellow crescendos as he retrieves the malevolent sword from the ground.
Cordelia's defiance surges forth, her voice an incantation of retribution that reverberates through the shattered sanctum. "I'm back, ya bastard! Everythin' ya stole from me, be prepared to repay!"
The cultist retorts with a venomous hiss, his wrath contorting his features. "You dare disrupt the family's ascent? Trai—" His words are abruptly truncated as Aki seemingly materializes before him, his blade a comet of vengeance. The cultist's reflexes jolt to life, barely managing to parry Aki's strike in the nick of time.
"No monologues," Aki's voice adopts a cold cadence as he feints a slash; the red-haired cultist falls for the feint, parrying nothing. Aki raises his left hand, and the cultist's eyes widen in fear as Aki unleashes a scorching ray at point-blank range. The cultist's body becomes a canvas for arcane flames, but Aki's amazement is palpable as the dark sword voraciously consumes the fire, its malevolence feeding upon the destruction.
"Fool! This artifact absorbs all-" The cultist's proclamation is abruptly silenced by the clash of their weapons, the dark sword's edge coming between them. Aki pivots seamlessly, his left fist transformed into a focused missile of retribution. The **** of his strike connects with the cultist's face, the impact shattering bone under the sheer intensity of Aki's fury. The cultist is propelled backward, crashing heavily against the steps of the altar.
Aki advances in relentless pursuit, his sword poised to seal the cultist's fate. Desperation fuels the cultist's final act of defiance; with a final hateful glare cast towards Cordelia, he drives the blade into his own belly.
Aki's attention is drawn to the egg, his fingers conjuring a cascade of magic missiles in a final gambit to thwart its essence's consumption. Yet, his efforts fall short; the three orbs rebound from the egg's surface as it fractures while consuming the soul of the red-haired cultist.
In an instant, Aki whirls around, his voice poised to warn Yumi of imminent danger. But before his words can materialize, an invisible **** slams into his back, propelling him forward with staggering ****.
The egg has hatched.
"Get up, Aki," Yumi's voice sounds urgently, shaking Aki awake.
Aki's eyes flutter open, his body aching, his face smeared with red from his fall onto the concrete floor. The metallic taste of blood lingers in his mouth.
"Are you alright?" Aki manages to ask as he pushes himself to his feet.
"Yeah, your warning allowed me to raise the shield," Yumi replies, her gaze flickering toward the spot where the egg once rested.
Aki turns his head, and his breath catches in his throat. The aura emanating from the place is already telling him that the cultists have succeeded in summoning something beyond their power to defeat. His heart races as he beholds the manifestation of the decayed god. A mix of awe and terror sends a shiver down his spine as he takes in the grotesque sight before them. The very air thickens with malevolence as the avatar stands, a grotesque embodiment of the god's twisted essence.
Its form is a gruesome canvas of decay and ruin. Rotted flesh clings to skeletal limbs, tattered shreds of clothing hanging unevenly. The avatar's skin bears scars of time, deep cracks that pulse and ooze a nameless darkness. Hollow eyes, pools of abyssal void, fix upon them with an unsettling intensity, exuding an ancient malevolence that transcends the corporeal.
An aura of **** and decay radiates from the avatar, its ripples reaching the very edges of their surroundings.
"Where's Cordelia?" Aki's desperation colors his voice as he scans the sky.
"She got hit by the **** too," Yumi responds, "I think Landale is okay though. The master bedroom is still floating above with the barriers."
Aki spots it too, but at this moment, it doesn't matter. "We have to escape," he says urgently.
Tension crackles through the air as the Avatar raises its hands. Aki and Yumi flinch, bracing themselves for whatever the Avatar is about to unleash. A rumbling noise from behind startles Aki, and he widens his eyes as he sees corrupted spirits emerging from the rubble.
Soon, almost every corrupted spirit is reanimated, surrounding them. Yumi raises her shield and tightens her grip on her mace. Aki stands firm, realizing his sword is nowhere to be seen. He readies magic missiles in one hand and a scorching ray in the other.
Just as the revived spirits begin their ****, a resounding voice echoes from above, capturing everyone's attention.
"Bravo, my champions!" the voice, unmistakably Cordelia's, rings out from the floating master bedroom.
Cordelia emerges from the doorway, hovering freely. As she does, the sky darkens with storm clouds swirling into formation. In her hands, a thorned vine whip materializes.
"No more egg defenses, Avatar! I'm free to destroy ya as I please!" Cordelia proclaims, swinging the glowing whip at the Avatar. The Avatar raises its arm to defend, but the whip slices through, leaving festering wounds in its wake. The Avatar howls in agony, its scream a testament to the damage inflicted. Cordelia then calls forth lightning from the roiling clouds, striking the majority of the revived corrupted spirits.
Aki and Yumi spring into action, dispatching the remaining corrupted spirits. They split up, their focus united: clearing the path for Cordelia to confront the Avatar without the interference of corrupted minions.
As he hurls every spell in his arsenal, Aki searches for his lost sword. He raises a barrier as one of his magic missiles is deftly dodged by a corrupted spirit before lunging at Aki. The spirit's dodge is in vain, as an arrow pierces it, causing it to dissipate mere inches from Aki's face.
Azzle appears above with his bow pointing at the spirit, a triumphant grin on his face. "Take that, you corrupted cun - Ouch!"
Landale shoves Azzle aside, his hands pulsating with sinister energy as he rejoins the fray with his own spells, "Move aside, goblin. I'm going to send all of these spirits back to hell."
With Azzle and Landale providing aerial support, Aki sets aside his search for the sword. His spells relentlessly target any spirits daring to assist the Avatar against Cordelia.
Yet, a sense of futility creeps in. Aki notices that despite Cordelia's whip inflicting damage, the Avatar regenerates faster than she can harm it.
Aki's mind races for a solution, a hunch forming. He quickly establishes a telepathic bond with Azzle.
"Azzle, is the door open?"
"Yes."
"Exit through it and tell me what you see."
"Roger that, boss."
Azzle rushes back inside, returning shortly after with crucial information.
"The forest, it's decaying!"
Aki clenches his teeth, his voice ringing out urgently, "CORDELIA! IT'S DRAWING LIFE FROM THE FOREST!"
Cordelia locks eyes with Aki, but instead surprise or fear, Aki saw nothing in her features but calm acceptance... And a silent understanding passes between the two.
"She's aware. She's... merely psyching herself up to what must be done," Aki thinks silently.
Raising her whip, Cordelia hits the avatar one final time. The left arm of the avatar is severed but only a horrifying sinister laughter comes from the avatar. It raises its left shoulder as if to mock the guardian deity and the arm regrows, good as new - or at least as new a decayed and rotten arm could be.
Scowling, Cordelia takes a deep breath. She glances at Aki and suddenly, time seems to stand still. An ethereal version of Cordelia materializes in front of him, her voice echoing with pride, "I'll say it again. Well done, my champion."
Cordelia's spectral arms embrace Aki, drawing him into a hug as she whispers, "Thank you... Just so ya know, I'm rootin' for ya. And stop your worryin', what you seek is at the end of your journey."
As Cordelia's ethereal form dissolves, a surge of energy rushes through Aki, his wounds healing. Aki observes his companions and a similar event must have occurred to them as all of them have curious expressions. Azzle shares the same wondrous look as Aki had, while Landale gazes down with a mix of confusion and anger. Yumi's expression is one of sadness.
In the sky, Cordelia bestows one last radiant smile upon the group before plunging toward the Avatar. The Avatar's massive fist rises to strike her, but Cordelia is quicker. With both her arms, she makes contact with the Avatar, a collision of primal forces.
A blinding flash ensues, temporarily obscuring Aki's vision. When the brilliance subsides, Aki squints, shielding his eyes from the residual light. Through the dissipating radiance, he observes that the Avatar and Cordelia are nowhere to be seen.
His attention shifts back to his companions, and relief washes over him as he confirms their well-being. Cordelia's final act protected them while mending their injuries.
With the mission done, Aki looks for his sword among the rubble. But at the altar where the egg once rested, glowing runes catch his eye. Those must have been the cultists' safeguards for the temple. The runes' brilliance is already dimming as Aki quickly approaches. Curious to what defenses the egg had used.
Seeing the runes about to vanish, Aki sprints towards it and manages to read a few lines...
"The Unsanctioned Temple, cloaked in ancient lore,
A sanctum for the chosen, forevermore.
Only the Tainted, Cursed, and Unwelcome find,
A passage into its depths, destinies entwined."
