What's next?
PEACEFUL DAYS PART 1 - AKI AND AZZLE POV
"Hey Aki, what's happening?" Yumi's steps draw her nearer to Aki, her curiosity etched on her expression.
The runes have already faded, and Aki parts his lips to respond, but a moment of hesitation washes over him, his gaze drifting momentarily into the distance. "It's just... the egg's defenses."
"I can't let her in on this... Not yet." Aki's thoughts race internally.
"Oh, what does it reveal?" Yumi's inquiry lingers in the air.
"Humans and corrupted spirits can breach the barrier," Aki replies succinctly. His gaze shifts to Yumi, capturing the quizzical arc of her eyebrow. Swiftly understanding the query in her eyes, he continues, "Azzle's a goblin, and goblins aren't inherently tainted by corruption. They're akin to untamed creatures, merely following their instincts. Though I do suspect the goblin boss might've found his way in."
"Ah," Yumi murmurs, taking up a stance beside him, her hand resting lightly on the altar railing. "So Cordelia...?" Her words trail off, the unspoken question hanging in the air.
Aki's heart tugs with a pang of sorrow as he replies, "She's gone... Thankfully, the cultists weren't able to complete the ritual. The avatar that appeared was a weaker manifestation; I doubt her plan would've had any success otherwise."
"Sacrifice," Yumi breathes, her voice almost a murmur to herself. A weighty hush envelops them as they jointly mourn Cordelia. Yumi's gaze descends to the ground while Aki shuts his eyes, grappling with his own suppressed sorrow. Cordelia's presence was fleeting, but he knows she possessed insights into his predicament that she chose not to fully share.
A few moments pass when, suddenly, Yumi's face lights up as she shifts her gaze to Aki. "Wait! So that means..."
Aki raises an eyebrow in curiosity. Yumi takes a step closer, her playful demeanor evident. "It means the reason Cordelia kissed you was to become corrupted?"
Aki's smile radiates warmth and genuineness. "Exactly. Although, I wouldn't quite phrase it as 'corrupted.' It's more like she lost her purity. I suspect that when Mielleki designated her as the guardian deity, one of the conditions was maintaining that purity."
"That explanation does sound better than 'she got corrupted by a kiss from you,'" Yumi playfully teases.
A soft chuckle escapes Aki's lips almost involuntarily. "Yeah, I can't argue with that."
Aki's gaze drifts upward, catching Landale casting feather fall on himself and Azzle. His eyes embrace the vast sky above, a broad grin illuminating his face. Birds glide gracefully overhead, the first signs of the forest's wildlife reclaiming this part of the woods.
"Well done, Cordelia," Aki silently acknowledges.
"Hey, Aki," Yumi's voice brings his focus back to her. He meets her gaze.
Yumi's lips curl into a mischievous smile, and her eyes flutter with playful innocence. "Today marks a victory, doesn't it? We can't let your only kiss be tainted by corruption."
Aki's face lights up, understanding Yumi's intention. "No, we definitely can't."
Closing the distance, Yumi's hands gently cup Aki's cheeks, drawing him closer. She leans in, and their lips meet in a tender kiss. Aki reciprocates, and the moment surpasses even his loftiest expectations.
As they part, Aki and Yumi share affectionate grins. Yumi prepares to speak, but the soft landing of Landale and Azzle nearby captures their attention, the feather fall ensuring a silent descent.
Azzle's triumph echoes in his raised bow. "We did it, boss! The cult's crushed!"
Aki nods, his smile warm as he acknowledges the goblin. "Yes, indeed. Great shooting, Azzle."
"What's our next move?" Landale's brow furrows as he questions the future.
"We're headed for the capital," Aki responds simply. He turns to Azzle. "You know the way, right?" A vigorous nod from Azzle confirms his knowledge. Aki continues, "How long until we reach the capital?"
Azzle takes a moment to calculate, counting on his fingers. "The portal shaved two days off our travel time. I'd estimate another three days until we're there."
"Perfect," Aki affirms, rising to his full height. His gaze locks onto Landale's, his intent crystal clear. "Let's get this straight, Landale. Once we reach the capital, we part ways?"
There's a moment of hesitation, fire and intensity in Landale's gaze as it meets Aki's. However, Aki remains resolute, unyielding. Slowly, Landale's expression softens into a grin. "Absolutely, Aki," he concedes.
"Good," Aki acknowledges. He draws in a deep breath, grappling with the situation. "This should defuse his suspicions or, at the very least, discourage any ongoing schemes. The defensive runes weren't as precise as I'd anticipated. Cordelia, Yumi, and I gained entry to the temple without issue, and our intentions are far from malevolent. The same rationale could extend to him."
"At the least, if there aren't additional defense layers within the runes, I believe I've gotten the correct question... Which category do you belong to, Landale: Cursed, tainted, or unwelcome?"
"I'll retrieve my sword, then we'll be set to depart," Aki declares.
Landale's voice cuts the air as he shifts his gaze toward the ominous dark ritual sword resting on the ground. "By the way, would you mind if I hang on to this? It could fetch a tidy price."
Aki considers the sword momentarily before returning his attention to Landale. He mulls over the request, thoughts churning. The sword itself isn't inherently aligned with malevolence, and Aki desires to avoid unnecessary tension. With a thoughtful nod, he responds, "Of course, Landale. It's yours."
A grin spreads across Landale's features as he picks up the sword, its hilt cold and unsettling in his grip. "Thanks, Aki. Might prove useful down the line."
The day unfolds with a sense of serenity, and as they tread along their path, the scent of decay lingers, a poignant reminder of the forest's recent turmoil. But nature is resilient, as Aki has noted. Signs of rejuvenation are evident - birds grace the skies, squirrels scurry about in search of sustenance. Azzle's keen aim nearly threatens the squirrel population, but Aki intervenes, gently guiding his bow away.
"Don't you feel it?" Aki's voice carries a soft admonition as he redirects Azzle's aim. "The forest is in the process of healing itself, little by little."
Azzle's response is a grumble laced with hunger. "I do, I do. But my stomach is in need of sustenance too!"
"The day is still young," Aki reassures, his gaze sweeping their surroundings. "Let's venture beyond this decaying region before we start our hunt."
Landale interjects, steering the conversation toward a more flavorful topic. "Speaking of food, how about a proper feast tonight? I've had my fill of rabbit. It's time for something more substantial."
Aki's attention shifts to Yumi, who is cheerfully skipping by his side. A subtle exchange of glances and a nod convey their mutual agreement. "Sounds like a plan," Aki concurs.
As Azzle turns, ready to draw his bow, Aki interjects once more, a smile touching his lips. "Not squirrels, Azzle."
Yumi chimes in, voicing her culinary preferences. "Chicken or pork would be a welcome change."
Landale's enthusiasm swells. "Then it's settled! Tonight, we're hunting for a grand feast."
He directs his attention back to Aki, his expression bright with challenge. "What do you say, Aki? Let's make it interesting. A competition - catch the biggest game."
Aki nods in agreement. "Sure thing. Yumi, you be the judge."
"Why me?" Yumi's playful protest takes a mischievous turn as she shifts her gaze to Azzle and points teasingly. "No, Azzle, you'll be the judge. I want a shot at winning too."
A puzzled look sweeps across Azzle's face as he surveys the trio before him, his uncertainty clear. Then, unexpectedly, a solitary tear escapes his eye.
"I-I can't believe you humans are offering to feed me," Azzle mumbles, emotion trembling in his voice. "I've truly joined the most extraordinary party."
ALLITERATIVE AZZLE
The day can't progress quickly enough for Azzle, his excitement practically tangible. The idea of his newfound companions joining him on a hunt fills him with delight. Echoes of the goblin camp persist, where Azzle toiled while the ungrateful goblin boss lounged, twirling an amulet between his thick fingers, spewing disdainful comments toward Azzle and his fellow goblins.
As the sun's warm embrace nears its farewell, Azzle immerses himself in the camp's preparations. He collects firewood, kindles the flames, and scrubs their cooking tools until they gleam. He employs clean water from the boss's enchanted satchel to scrub the pans, sneakily eyeing Yumi's similar container. A smug contentment settles within him, aware that the bumbling Landale is without one as well.
Aki's sharp awareness captures Azzle's intrigue. A tap on the shoulder accompanies Aki's assurance, "I'll craft one for you soon. The materials are lacking now, but the capital will provide."
Gratitude sparkles in Azzle's nod as he arranges Aki's sleeping roll, positioning it optimally near the campfire.
With the camp arranged—sleeping rolls spread out, fire flickering merrily, Aki's defensive runes inscribed—Yumi rises gracefully, stretching fluidly. "Are you gentlemen ready?"
In unison, the two males express their readiness, their gazes tracking Yumi's graceful movements. Azzle observes Aki's subtle attempts to conceal his stare, while Landale's eyes resemble those of a hungry wolf. Azzle remains unfazed by her allure; she's slightly too imposing for his taste.
Having discarded their armor for the hunt, they stand attired in lighter garb, the weight of metal protection cast aside. Currently, Azzle attends to Aki's armor, methodically polishing it with a cloth.
"Azzle," Aki's voice rouses him from his task. He raises his gaze. "What shall be our rules?"
Azzle ponders for a moment, then offers, "The one who captures the largest and finest prey claims the prize... within a three-hour timeframe?"
"Three hours?" Yumi muses, her grin infectious. "Quite generous. You really want to ensure we bring back the very best, huh?"
Yumi's deduction is accurate, and Azzle feels a flush of embarrassment. He diverts his attention, focusing intently on his cleaning cloth.
Aki nods in agreement and adds an additional condition. "If possible, aim to capture them alive. We wouldn't want an excess of provisions."
Not much time has elapsed, perhaps just around half an hour, since the trio departed. Azzle finds himself settled against a tree, gazing up at the stars. Gratitude envelops him as he contemplates the companions he now considers his own, silently extending thanks to whatever goblin god might have blessed him with these cherished friends. Excitement courses through him for their impending journey to the capital. Aki had explained that upon reaching their destination, they would formalize his membership by inscribing his name on a piece of parchment alongside Aki's and Yumi's.
Suddenly, Azzle's ear twitches as an unfamiliar sound reaches him.
Furrowing his brow, he straightens, scanning his surroundings. While not exactly fearful, since Aki's protective measures would have triggered in the presence of danger, a sense of unease washes over him. It's as if his intuition urges caution and distance. In fact, his gut is almost screaming at him to just ignore it.
Yet, Azzle can't bring himself to completely disregard the situation. "Who's there?" he murmurs under his breath, his eyes widening. Internally torn, he's curious about the interloper's identity, yet he secretly hopes they'll depart without incident.
Silence follows his query, prompting Azzle to release a quiet sigh of relief. He casts a wary glance around before settling back against the tree.
"Ahh," a female voice breaks the silence, lacking panic, which only deepens Azzle's confusion.
As stealthily as possible, he retrieves his bow placed beside him. Rising to his feet, he hones in on the sound's origin, his ears attuned to every rustle. After a while, he pinpoints its source—a bit farther than his initial assumption. The stillness of the night must have carried the voice further than expected.
Proceeding cautiously, Azzle strides toward the sound. "There," he mentally pinpoints, marking the location. Nocking an arrow onto his bowstring, he aims at a tall tree and an imposing shrub in the distance.
"Who's lurking there?" Azzle's voice erupts, bowstring pulled taut. "This is your last warning, you lawless louts!"
All of a sudden, Yumi's pallid visage emerges from the shadows behind the tree. Her cheeks carry a faint flush, her gaze appears distant. Azzle's view is limited to her face, concealed by the tree's trunk and the thicket.

"Ah!" Azzle exclaims, rapidly lowering his bow. "I apologize! I thought I heard something."
"No need to worry, Ah... Azzle," Yumi replies, her lip caught between her teeth.
"Can I be of any assistance?" Azzle offers, bridging the gap between them.
"No!" Yumi's abrupt outburst arrests Azzle in his tracks. "It's just... ahh... fu..."
"What's amiss?" Azzle inquires, his step faltering. There's no specific reason, but a wave of unease surges through him. Whatever it may be, he senses that ignorance might be the safer path.
"Damn it!" Yumi's abrupt expletive is muffled by her hands clamping over her mouth, her body exhibiting fleeting spasms.
"I'll... I'll give you some space," Azzle stammers, his wide eyes betraying his apprehension. Casting a furtive glance back at the tree, he wonders if someone else might be with Yumi. But the tree's girth isn't ample enough to fully conceal another person... Or at least someone standing upright, given that the shrub could effectively hide a person crouching.
"Yes... Please..." Yumi's words bear a touch of urgency, accompanied by an odd squelching sound.
"Yumi?" Azzle's inquiry is tinged with concern, his thoughts turning to Aki. Aki wouldn't likely approve if Azzle retreated this quickly. "Do you truly want me to withdraw?"
"Go!" Yumi commands, though a degree of incoherence clings to her words. Her mouth moves, yet her speech fumbles over itself. "Just leave me be - I'll be coming shortly..."
Stepping back a couple of paces, Azzle pivots and hastily returns to his original position.
Back at the campsite, Azzle's mind is a muddle of confusion, grappling to comprehend the recent scene. Restlessly pacing, he contemplates the puzzling encounter, striving to decipher Yumi's unexpected outburst.
"Perhaps she was tending to a personal matter?" Azzle muses aloud. "Yes, that seems plausible! Just a private moment."
He leans against the tree once more, a sympathetic smile on his lips. He even lets out a quiet chuckle, feeling a touch of embarrassment on Yumi's behalf. Yet, as his gaze shifts back to the tree and the bush concealing Yumi's episode, a flicker of unease remains.
Azzle's palm meets his cheek in a gentle, self-inflicted slap, as if to snap himself from the uneasy train of thought.
"I won't allow this to cast a shadow," Azzle resolves firmly. "I choose to erase this occurrence from memory. These friendships are too precious to be tainted by doubt."
With a determined nod, Azzle sets his mind to expunge the incident from his thoughts.
Nearly three hours have slipped away when Yumi steps into view, her face flushed from exertion, yet a glint of detachment in her eyes hints at something more profound lurking beneath.
In tow, she brings a boar—a substantial one at that. Azzle quickens his pace toward her. "Now that's quite the catch!"
Yumi manages a smile, though it doesn't quite reach her eyes. She nods. "It's still breathing. Managed to knock it out."
Azzle's gaze flickers to his dagger. "Shall I put it down, Yumi?"
"No, let's hold off for now..." Yumi's reply is measured, her tone somewhat distant. "Has Aki returned yet?"
"No," Azzle responds, re-sheathing the dagger. "You're the first to make it back."
Nodding, Yumi secures the boar's restraints before settling onto her makeshift bed. An awkward silence hovers between them, until after a beat, Yumi starts, "Azzle, about before... I was—"
"Answering nature's call?" Azzle interjects, a playful grin on his lips, his tone lightly teasing, secretly hoping for Yumi to validate his guess.
Yumi's cheeks redden, but her gaze doesn't quite meet Azzle's. She takes a deep breath, then shifts her focus to the flickering campfire. "Y-Yes, that's it. It's a bit embarrassing, so..."
"No need to elaborate," Azzle assures her, releasing a relieved breath, content to let the matter rest. "Your secret is safe with me."
"Thank you, Azzle," Yumi murmurs, her voice tinged with distance as her attention remains on the dance of flames.
A pause stretches out, until Landale's self-assured arrival breaks the silence. He slings a boar over his shoulder, larger than Yumi's. Grateful for the change in atmosphere, Azzle greets him with enthusiasm. "Now that's a contender!"
Landale's grin broadens. "What're you waiting for, goblin? Let's get this creature ready for roasting."
"Is it already lifeless?" Azzle inquires, rising and retrieving his dagger.
"Completely lifeless," Landale confirms, poised to begin the preparation.
"Killed it already, have you?" a voice interrupts, drawing everyone's attention. Emerging from the shadows, Aki steps forward with a bag slung over his shoulder. It becomes evident to Azzle that whatever Aki carries, it's noticeably smaller than Landale's impressive catch.
"Indeed," Landale boasts. "Behold the sheer size of this creature!"
"Very well," Aki concedes, his composure intact. "Let's get it ready for cooking."
"This beast barely resisted capture. Had I more time, I'd have found an even larger one!" Landale's excitement is palpable, his confidence radiating. His glance briefly flits toward Yumi, who discreetly avoids meeting his eyes.
"I didn't say you won," Aki counters, gently placing down his bag. "But since yours is already dead, it would be wasteful to prepare mine. We'll relish my catch tomorrow."
With practiced hands, Aki opens the bag, revealing an impressive sight - moonshadow rabbits. These elusive hares only emerge beneath the glow of the full moon. Azzle pauses in his preparations, awe illuminating his features. "Remarkable! Pursuing those demands deftness. They're marvelously nimble and elusive.""
Landale's mouth works soundlessly, his expression resembling a baffled fish. Yumi offers a faint smile as she rises, releasing the boar she's caught. The boar casts a wary look at the four of them before bolting away in fear.
Aki's gaze shifts to Azzle, conveying a subtle message. Grinning in response, Azzle declares, "Aki takes the triumph!"
In an instant, Landale rises to his full height, a mix of frustration and desperation coloring his eyes. His shout is a blend of intensity and urgency. "I demand a rematch! Tomorrow! I got distracted and I..."
Aki studies the moonshadow rabbits he's procured, then turns his gaze to Azzle, a hint of apology in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Azzle," he communicates before gently unfastening the binds that held the moonshadow rabbits.
"No!" Azzle exclaims, his eyes widening in shock as the moonshadow rabbits swiftly dart away.
"We still have a substantial boar," Aki says with a smile. "Get that one prepared for us, Azzle."
Azzle complies, muttering curses under his breath and occasionally casting pointed glances at the equally annoyed Landale.
