CULT OF THE WITHERED TREE (PART 1 OF 2) - AKI POV
Stepping through the door woven by Cordelia's enchantment, the trio enters a room that stands as a silent witness to a distant era. This chamber, once a bedroom of splendid design, now lies in ruins, claimed by the relentless march of decay.
A bluish luminescence suffuses the air, casting an eerie light across the scene. The room's lavish furnishings and intricate tapestries have surrendered to an unsettling stillness. A grand canopy bed, its once-rich fabrics now worn and faded, occupies a corner of the room. The floorboards groan beneath their feet, echoing the weight of time itself.
Dark tree roots have infiltrated the walls, twisting and winding like malevolent serpents asserting their dominion. They coil and entwine, an organic testament to the unbreakable link between the mansion and the corrupted forest beyond.
Yumi draws nearer to Aki, her grip firm on his arm as they survey their surroundings, capturing Aki's attention. He finds it amusing; he didn't expect fear from Yumi, and indeed, she isn't afraid. Instead of inspecting the eerie room they're in, her angry gaze remains fixed on Cordelia.
Aki's curiosity about the place prompts him to turn to Cordelia, his voice filled with wonder. "So, where exactly have we landed? This doesn't seem like a temple."
Cordelia shrugs nonchalantly, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. "This used to be a bedroom, a fancy one at that. Fit for someone ruling a kingdom, ya know?"
As the party takes in the scene, Cordelia continues to recount a forgotten past. "Back in the day, this place wasn't much of a temple. 'Twas a mansion, owned by a powerful clan. History's mostly dust now, but some traces remain."
In the hush of the room, Cordelia's words conjure fleeting images of an era when life flourished within these walls, and the mansion reverberated with the laughter and secrets of its inhabitants. Now, those echoes have faded, replaced by the insidious touch of darkness.
They stand within the heart of the temple, on the third floor, where the master bedroom once held court. The significance of their location is not lost on them. They stand on the threshold of history, where the past collides with the present, and where the mansion's opulence has been replaced by the creeping tendrils of corruption.
Cordelia's mystical door occupies the space of one of the bedroom's portals. It's an odd sight, indeed. The door stands ajar, revealing the sunlit forest beyond to Aki, yet the light refrains from entering the room. It's as if the foulness of the temple repels its radiance.
As the party absorbs the room's atmosphere, a rustling sound draws their attention. Cordelia, who had observed silently, approaches the door leading outside. She cautiously nudges it open, just enough to peer beyond.
In an instant, Cordelia releases a silent yelp, hastily slamming the door shut, her form trembling. Aki, startled, advances. "Cordelia, what's wrong?"
Breathing heavily, Cordelia turns to them, her voice trembling as she speaks. "There are corrupted spirits and cultists lurkin' outside. About six of 'em... The air feels thick with their malevolence."
Aki furrows his brow in confusion. "But you're a deity, Cordelia. Why would you be scared of such lowly enemies?"
Cordelia's lips twitch into a guilty smile. She hesitates for a moment before revealing the truth. "Well... while I promised to accompany you, I never said I'd engage 'em."
Aki's expression shifts from confusion to realization. "You're saying you're powerless within the temple?"
Cordelia nods, her smile widening as her tail wags playfully. "No worries! Advice, blessings, and guidance are still at hand, but jumping into battles isn't my style. Comes with being a guardian deity, ya know."
Aki's anger flares, his voice sharp as he confronts Cordelia. "You misled us! You created the illusion of protection, only to reveal now that you're practically defenseless?"
Landale yelps fearfully, shifting Aki's gaze to him. Panic-stricken, Landale rushes towards the door they just entered through. But as he approaches, the welcoming sunlit forest scene dissolves, reverting to what seems like a bathroom. Unable to halt in time, he stumbles and falls into the room. His exclamation transforms into a surprised yelp as he finds himself falling face-first into a toilet. Aki winces as he hears a wet splash.
Turning back to Cordelia, Aki finds her with her hands raised, her determination overshadowing her previous emotions. "Escaping's not an option! This is pretty much our last shot!"
As Landale clumsily extricates himself from the toilet, his face flushed with embarrassment and indignation, Yumi's patience wears thin. She steps forward, mace in hand, and points it menacingly at Cordelia. "If you can't fight here, then you won't stand a chance when this mace greets your face!"
"Go ahead! You can't harm me, dodging you's a breeze. I'll even turn ya into a frog once we're out of here, see if Aki still fancies you then!" Cordelia retorts, raising both hands into fists and gesturing for Yumi to come closer.
Eyes wide with anger, Yumi roars, about to attack Cordelia, but Aki intervenes swiftly, placing himself between Cordelia and Yumi, grabbing her by the shoulders. "Yumi, calm down!"
Yumi's gaze doesn't waver as she glares at Cordelia. "She's been deceiving us, Aki."
"And yet, incapacitating her will only leave us trapped here without a means to escape," Aki says urgently, locking eyes with Yumi. "Let me talk to her."
Yumi doesn't say anything, but she lowers the mace nonetheless. Maintaining his firm grip on Yumi, Aki turns to Cordelia, who lowers her hands. "Cordelia, this is a dire situation. You must have realized that we aren't strong enough for this."
"Fighting isn't the sole approach," Cordelia counters haughtily, her arms crossed. "Think of it as a stealth mission. We can skip tearing down the altar. Just destroy the egg, and once that's done, the temple's defenses crumble. Then I'll join the fray."
Aki thinks quickly, his brows furrowed. "I'm sorry, Cordelia. We aren't skilled in stealth missions. Our last attempt ended with an entire goblin camp in flames," he says.
Cordelia's smile widens, mischief dancing in her eyes. "Oddly fitting. Once we shatter the egg, we'll bid farewell to this cursed temple in a blaze of destruction and ruin. And maybe Landale can add his touch of fire too."
Aki closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, and gazes at Yumi. His look communicates their lack of alternatives. Landale stands behind Yumi, seemingly resigned to whatever Aki decides is best.
Turning back to Cordelia, Aki looks at her earnestly. "You mentioned something about blessings?"
Cordelia raises her hands, a whirl of energy enveloping her. "Trust me, my blessings pack a punch. Want to give those outside a taste of my boons?"
Empowered by Cordelia's blessings, the group glides out of the decaying master bedroom with the subtlety of shadows. The dimly lit corridors guide their movements, conducted with the quiet grace of whispers. Ahead, the scene verifies Cordelia's prior information – six cultists and malevolent spirits patrol the hallway, vigilant and cautious.
Aki, Yumi, and Landale exchange knowing glances, their determination unwavering. Without exchanging words, they spread out, Cordelia's blessings rendering them nearly invisible to their adversaries.
The cultists and spirits hover near an open doorway, their attention sharp as they survey their surroundings. Seizing the opportunity, Aki, Yumi, and Landale strike with precision and lethal intent. Swift and soundless, they eliminate the first trio of foes before a countermove can be mounted, their actions a deadly ballet.
Yet, the swift demise of their companions doesn't go unnoticed. The remaining cultists and spirits pivot, expressions a mix of shock and fury as they acknowledge the loss. The element of surprise shatters, replaced by a renewed ferocity as the adversaries prepare to counterattack.
Amid the enemies' rallying, Aki, Yumi, and Landale stand firm, guided by Cordelia's blessings and their unyielding resolve. Their actions harmonize, their abilities magnified by divine intervention. The **** is unremitting, leaving minimal room for the adversaries to respond effectively.
Aki's blade collides with a cultist's staff, a combat dance perfected by training and divine guidance. Yumi's mace strikes with unwavering accuracy, dismantling another foe's defenses. Despite their foes' efforts to regroup, the heroes' strength, combined with Cordelia's blessings, tilts the odds in their favor. Defenses crumble, spells falter, and attacks lose coherence.
Landale's sword moves with newfound expertise, his strikes a testament to his burgeoning prowess. With a triumphant grin, he dispatches his adversary before Aki and Yumi can conclude their fights.
His grin turning smug, Landale watches the final clash unfold. The remaining enemies crumble, their forms dissolving into shadows as life slips away. The hallway, once a realm of malevolence, now witnesses the silent triumph of stealth, Cordelia's blessings, and unwavering determination.
"A bit slow there, Aki," Landale teases, his tone carrying playful arrogance. "Perhaps you need more practice, huh?"
Before Aki can reply, Cordelia applauds gleefully, emerging from the master bedroom. "See? Told ya! My blessings aren't something to take lightly!"
Approaching Aki, she radiates jubilation. "Good job, lad." Before Aki can react, she leans closer, her lips shaping into a kiss.
Suddenly, Aki senses a swift motion behind him, and, once again, Yumi is gripping his arms tightly, her breath heavy on his shoulders. Cordelia giggles before teasing Yumi with a tongue-out gesture and a playful eye roll. Aki hears Yumi muttering threats under her breath.
Landale's triumphant grin wavers slightly. "I beat mine first! Why's he getting all the credit?" he exclaims, incredulous.
Cordelia turns her head toward Landale, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "You're meant to defeat yours first, else you'd be showcasing some major weaknesses."
"Oh," Landale mutters, his confidence wavering. "So, mine was the weakest?"
Cordelia's response remains enigmatic as her gaze shifts downward, as though peering through the layers of the temple. Still searching for an answer, Landale turns to Yumi and Aki.
Yumi immediately shrugs, but Aki contemplates for a moment before shaking his head. To his knowledge, the enemies they faced were of equal difficulty. Landale nods appreciatively at Aki.
With a graceful gesture, Cordelia motions for them to proceed straight toward the descending staircase. Their objective lies cloaked in the shadows of the temple's lower levels.
As they reach the stairwell, Cordelia's voice takes on a melodious quality. "Give me a sec, my champions," she suggests playfully. With a soft incantation, her connection to the natural world deepens, invoking the magic of 'Commune with Nature.' Her eyes radiate with a verdant light as she attunes herself to the surroundings.
"It's safe to proceed," she announces after a brief pause, her voice carrying the authority of a guardian deity. "The path downstairs is free of immediate danger."
Guided by Cordelia's expertise, the group stealthily descends to the second floor. The air feels heavier here, tainted by the malevolent energy that saturates the temple. As they make their way towards the last set of stairs leading further down, Aki's keen perception catches a peculiar sight.
Landale, with a smile stretching from ear to ear, is swinging his sword in practiced arcs. His movements are surprisingly fluid, his strikes precise and controlled. It's as if he's entranced by his own newly discovered skill, an awe-inspiring realization of his own swordsmanship prowess. Aki raises an eyebrow, impressed by the wizard's unexpected proficiency with a blade.
"Was he truly that skilled? I know he has boons but so do I... I would've remembered if a classmate of mine was better than me at the academy, right?" Aki ponders silently, chiding himself for not paying closer attention.
Once again, Cordelia's connection to nature comes to the fore. With a contemplative expression, she invokes the magic of "Commune with Nature," seeking guidance from the natural forces around her. Her eyes shimmer with an otherworldly glow as she interprets the environment's responses.
After a moment, Cordelia refocuses on the group. She imparts her findings, her voice a mixture of concern and determination. "I've figured where the egg and the altar are. They're sittin' pretty in the welcomin' hall on the first floor. However..."
Her voice trails off, a shadow of uncertainty clouding her features. "There's a whole bunch of ritualists down there," she finally admits. "Looks like they're gatherin' for the egg's big debut. We gotta tread careful."
Cordelia's expression shifts as she mentally processes the information, her brows furrowed in concentration.
"We need a way to slip into the welcomin' hall, snatch the egg, and dodge any unwanted attention," she murmurs, more to herself than the group. "Their numbers are a concern, but lettin' that egg hatch and spread its nasty mojo ain't an option."
Yumi's grip on Aki's shoulder tightens, and she shakes him gently. Aki turns to her, their gazes meeting. In that moment, he senses her unwavering trust in him.
"Aki, I doubt Cordelia can come up with a feasible plan," Yumi whispers. "She's a powerful deity, but her strategies might be anchored in the assumption that we are on her level. Why don't you take the lead in devising the strategy? If it's you, I'll throw myself off a cliff if you tell me to."
Aki's nod and warm smile acknowledge her faith. He shifts his focus to Cordelia, his mind teeming with questions that could hold the key to their success.
"What exactly happens when the egg hatches?" Aki inquires, his question drawing Cordelia's solemn gaze.
"When the egg cracks open," Cordelia explains, her voice heavy with gravity, "it's gonna unleash the avatar of a decayed god—a real nasty piece of work, all power and corruption. The forest, once teemin' with life, is gonna get a serious dose of dark mojo. Nature's gonna wither, and the whole balance keepin' this place together's gonna crumble."
Aki absorbs Cordelia's words, a growing realization of the magnitude of their mission settling upon him. It's not just about stopping the cultists; it's about safeguarding the entire forest's equilibrium, the academy where he and Yumi has spent their childhood in will definitely fall. As the gravity of the situation sinks in, a daring idea takes root in his mind – a potentially perilous plan.
As the tense situation unfolds, Aki's mind races for a solution, seeking any advantage they can exploit. He turns to Cordelia, posing the pivotal question, "What if we break the egg?"
Cordelia's expression shifts to uncertainty, her brows furrowing as she admits, "I dunno. The power in that egg's way beyond me, and the aftermath might be mind-blowin'."
Aki's determination remains unwavering. "Cordelia, redistribute your blessings from everyone else to me, focusing on the strongest ones. I intend to proceed alone and assess the situation firsthand."
Cordelia's immediate reaction is to refuse, her aura pulsating with concern. "I can't let ya go solo."
Yumi steps forward, her gaze unwavering as she interjects, "Cordelia, Aki is different. He possesses qualities unlike anyone we've encountered. One way or another, Aki always finds a way."
Aki maintains an enigmatic expression but he ponders Yumi's remark, "Could she be referring to... No, that's impossible."
Cordelia hesitates, the weight of her knowledge about Aki's unique abilities evident in her eyes. After a moment, she concedes with a **** nod. "Alright, but we gotta find cover first. The cultists and spirits are so close to that egg that they'll sniff us out."
Guided by Cordelia, the heroes quickly take cover behind debris and shattered furniture. Cordelia carefully withdraws her blessings from their forms, a subtle energy shimmer dissipating into the air. Aki experiences a fleeting vulnerability as the protection recedes, but he trusts in his plan.
As Cordelia's blessings transfer to Aki, a surge of power courses through him, forging a newfound connection to the forest. His senses sharpen, attuning to the shadows and natural elements that can shroud him.
Standing before his companions, Aki draws a deep breath and directs his gaze toward the staircase leading to the lower floors. "I'll be back. Stay concealed and remain vigilant."
With a nod, Aki takes a purposeful step, his movements poised and calculated as he descends the staircase alone. Cordelia watches him with a blend of concern and hope, her fingertips lightly brushing against the fabric of reality as she readies herself to intervene if needed.
The descent is silent and tense, each step plunging Aki deeper into the temple's corruption. Upon reaching the second floor landing, he acknowledges that he is now truly alone. His heart quickens, but he taps into Cordelia's blessings and his own determination.
Cautiously, he advances toward the final staircase leading to the welcoming hall on the first floor—the rumored location of the egg and altar. Just before descending, he pauses, attuned to faint chants and the ominous aura emanating from below.
Aki closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, his lips curving into a small smile. He is in his element now, embracing the challenge and danger ahead. Amidst the tension, a thought arises, echoing Yumi's words: "One way or another, Aki finds a way." He contemplates those words, pondering how those words seems to follow him.
"One way or... another."
Shaking off the introspection, Aki readies himself for the task ahead. With a final steadying breath, he takes the first step down, embarking on a path that will either save the forest or plunge it into even greater darkness.
In the dimness of a room, Aki's heart pounds as he awaits the perfect moment. His senses are honed to a razor's edge, muscles coiled, and readiness palpable. Cultists parade by in a line, ignorant of his presence. Aki melds into the shadows, his form blending seamlessly. As the final cultist glides past, he reappears, movements swift and lethal. He seizes the cultist by the head, muffling any outcry, and pulls him inside the room. With a precise twist of the neck, he silences the cultist for good, before swiftly donning the dark robe.
Cultists who caught the faint disturbance turn, briefly alarmed, but their sight reveals only a lone cultist following in tow. Assured, they revert their attention and continue their march. Hidden by the robe, Aki becomes one with their ranks, a silent shadow in their midst.
As he shadows the cultists towards their destination, tense anticipation simmers within Aki as the entrance to the Welcoming Hall emerges. Once he walks into the hall, the sight that greets him is both mesmerizing and terrifying – the egg, pulsating with ominous energy, encircled by a myriad of corrupted spirits and cultists immersed in a malevolent rite. The sheer scope of the assembly momentarily awes him.
"Hundreds of them..." Aki ponders, grappling with the magnitude of the situation.
His focus sharpens as he witnesses the unfolding ritual. Nature spirits, the forest's very heartbeat, are arranged before the egg. Their essence is siphoned, a macabre offering to fuel the rite. A cultist slashes a spirit with a dark blade, sapping its vitality and channeling it into the egg. The nature spirit's anguished wail pierces the air as it fades away.
Abruptly, the cultists' chant shifts, and Aki's mind races to unravel the significance. The truth strikes him like lightning, "It's a countdown! Sinister numbers ticking down to the sacrifice. How many remain? Twenty spirits... We don't have time," he realizes with a surge of terror.
Against the ticking clock, Aki's mind races. He must think, strategize, and act with urgency. The fate of the forest, the academy, and countless lives teeters on the edge.
"Countless foes, no escape nor time... the spirits, the egg, in a vast temple..." Aki's gaze darts, taking in every nuance...
After ensuring he has gathered all possible information, Aki takes a deep breath, soothing his racing heartbeat until it returns to normal. He then closes his eyes and enters into a deep think.
