Chapter 11

Can Caroline grab the book without trouble?

Mind your step

Caroline slowly walked forward, paying attention to every step. She knew that the slightest misstep would be the difference between success or becoming dinner to these freaks of nature. All color drained from her face when she saw her next obstacle; to get to the side table she had to walk between the armchair with the alpha male and the bed. The problem? On the floor were two Spider Wolves sleeping, fully spread out. She had to step over them if she ever wanted to reach the book.

Here goes nothing.” Caroline raised her leg, making sure she wouldn’t step on the beasts. Sweat started dripping from her back as her foot reached the floor, which creaked from the collective weight. She closed her eyes, fearing the sound would wake up the beasts. Hearing the Spider Wolves still sleeping, she opened her eyes and took a deep sigh. She shifted her body, leaning on the leg she just moved. She prepared herself to lift her other leg.

Go!” She quickly made the step, almost making her lose her balance. After she found her footing, she tried opening up the drawer. Finding it locked, she grabbed her knife and messed with the lock.

You better be in here after all this.” She heard a loud click, and the drawer opened up. In there, she found the black book, and a steel key. “Don’t know what that key is for, but I better keep it with me.” She quickly hid it in her loincloth bottoms, as she grabbed the book. Opening it up on the first page, she read;

“October 24, 2019.

For year I’ve hunted every animal on the planet; elephants, rhinos, lions, you name it. Probably even helped making some species extinct. Every predator has been my prey, and now hunting bores me. I considered giving hunting up, but I’ve been doing it for so long, I no longer know what else to do. Hunting is the only thing I know. So instead, I hired some lab coats, making them create some impossible crossbreeds. When they’re done, I have my entire island filled with beasts, deadlier than any other. Finally, the boredom will fade away, and I’ll have some new trophies.

Lord, this man truly is sickening.” Thought Caroline to herself. “Still, I need to find that code.” She skimmed through the book, searching at everything with numbers. Finally, she found the page.

I keep forgetting the code for that bloody armory. So I finally set it to something I can remember; 942807. Or 28 of July, 1994, the day my dad took me for my first hunting trip.

Got it!” Caroline grinned, having a desperately needed glimmer of hope. Feeling the book could come in handy, she decided to take it with her.

Now, for the part that she really dreaded; the way back over the Spider Wolves. She once more raised her leg over them, and attempted to make the second step. But due to her hastiness, she lost her equilibrium, making her accidentally step on a Spider Wolf’s tail.

A single “Crap!” escaped Caroline’s lips, as she made a dash for the dumbwaiter. As she was about to jump into it, a web was shot at it, blocking the exit. Seeing all spider Wolves awake, she fled through the bedroom door to the hallway, narrowly dodging the webs. She closed the door behind her, barricading it by shoving a drawer in front of it. Seeing how violently the door was being barged, she knew she had to leave quickly. By her estimate, she was on the third floor, and had to enter the basement by using the stairs.

How does the journey go?
