Naked dance around the bonfire

The clearing has no bushes, hedges or even trees. It is just a large grassy field, with maybe a few flowers here and there, and then a stone platform in the center. I notice that where the clearing ends and the forest begins, is a hedge row. The perfect place for the guys to hide behind and look at us. The only opening in the hedge is where the path begins, which is now marked by 2 lit torches.

Our group walks towards the center of the clearing, where the flat stones are. They have been carefully carved and places so they make a perfect circle. Surrounding the stone platform are come instruments. I notice a drum, a harp, a flute and others. While on the platform itself is a large pile of firewood.

Maire, our torch bearer, walks up to the stone platform and lights the bonfire. Dunla tells us that those who know how to play an instrument can pick one up and play it. I don’t really know how to play any of them, so I just take the drum. Then Dunla tells us to make a circle around the bonfire. As we are moving into position, I catch the scent of burned herbs. Those must be the herbs that were mixed in with the firewood to give the bonfire a wonderful aroma. When we are all ready and the bonfire is burning nicely, Dunla rings her bell 3 times. Then she places it on front of the bonfire and it is time for us to start dancing.

The girls who already did Samhains in previous years start walking to their left. I and the other new girls follow their movements. Those who have instruments start playing, so I start tapping the drum I am holding in a way that I feel fits with the other instruments. That’s when the other girls start adding to their movements and they seamlessly start dancing. Before I know it, my movements too have adjusted to those of a dance. Soon all of us girls are dancing and twirling around this bonfire.

The sun is down and night is upon us. The only lights we have are of the moon and the bonfire. Eighteen young adult women are hopping and skipping in a circle around a large fire, naked as the day they were born. As we dance, I feel like I can sense the spirits of our ancestors dancing along with us. All the while, at the edge of the glade and hidden behind the hedges, are likely a couple of single men, all of them staring at us. It is truly a lot more fun and exciting than I imagined it would be.

I am certain the spirits are grateful and will bless us for the coming year.” Dunla announces. “But now it is time for us to return home. You may all place the instruments on the ground and gather in with me.”

Those of us who played an instrument place it respectfully on the ground and then we get close to Dunla.

“Does everyone understand the rules for straying?” Dunla asks before she starts sending us home. But nobody has any questions.

“Alright then. For those who are afraid to stray for a fear of getting lost in the woods, know that the village is in the east and moss grows on the north side of the trees. If you do get lost, simply go to the nearest tree and check which side grows the most moss. That’s the side that leads away from the village.” Dunla announces. “Now then. Who will go first?”
