Chapter 3

What's next?

Statue or Security?

"Oh crap! Oh crap! Oh crap!" Barbara the Security Guard squeaked as she looked over what was formally the latest piece of the local art gallery.

"What is going on in - MY STATUE!"

Barbara looked up to see Emily, the artist who had brought in the piece and her best friend, racing into the room and kneeling before the shattered remains. "MY BABY!" Emily cried, looking up at the security guard. "What happened?!"

"I swear! It was an accident!" Barbara said, holding her hands up. "I only leaned up against the pillar and... Well... I tried to catch it!"

Emily picked up the severed head of the statue as she stood up, letting out a sigh. "Okay, okay. I'm not gonna panic." She said, "So what if the art critics and collectors who will either make or break me will be here in..." She looked down at her watch, "Half an hour. I'll just run back home, grab the spare I made, and -" she looked back down at her watch again in fear, "HALF AN HOUR?! AHHHHH! I'm ruined! And before I could even make a name for myself!"

"Emily, calm down." Barbara said, "We can just tell the critics and collectors that there's been a slight delay and to come back tomorrow."

"Barb! I've got people from The Louvre and The Smithsonian coming in to judge if they're even going to entertain the idea of buying my art." Emily stated, "I can't just tell them to 'come back tomorrow'! And there's not enough time to go home and grab the spare!"

"Well, what else can you do?"

Emily opened her mouth only to close it again, looking back down at the head of broken statue before looking up at Barbara's head. She looked back down at the statue, then back up at Barbara. Statue, Barbara. That was when an idea popped into her head as she grinned wickedly at her friend and security guard.

Of course, Barbara was no mind reader, but she knew exactly what Emily was planning...

"Absolutely not!" Barbara spat, "Forget it! Not happening! No way, Jose! Nyet! Nein! Negative! Nuh-uh! Hell no!"

"I cannot believe I let you talk me into this..." Barbara muttered as she kneeled naked on the pillar in the same pose the statue had been in.

"Don't worry." Emily said as she scooped up the last of the rubble and threw it away. "You just have to convince the buyers that you're the real deal until the auction is over and the critics give their say. Then, after I sign the paperwork with whatever museum buys the statue, I'll tell them they can pick it up tomorrow. That'll give us enough time for you to get dressed and for me to grab the double from home. I switch you with the real art piece, nobody will know the difference, and we'll look back on this and laugh at this funny memory."

"Why did you make these things look like me, anyway?" Barbara asked.

Before Emily could answer, her phone buzzed. Pulling it out of her pocket, the woman gasped as she said, "No time! They're here!"

How does the art show go? Can Barbara and Emily fool the critics and buyers?
