Chapter 3

What's next?

April's Promise

April laid back in the tub, soaking into the warm bubbly water as she sighed blissfully with a smile on her face. The room was filled with lit candles as a speaker played smooth jazz. A stack of small romance novels and a box of chocolates sat on a nearby table.

"Ah, this is the life." April said as she looked around the room briefly before returning to her soak. "A Saturday morning off of work, a warm bubble bath, rose scented candles, smooth jazz, paperback romance, chocolates; the perfect day off! How can this possibly get any better?!"

Suddenly, the bathroom door swung open and another woman about April's age (twenty-six) came into the room. "Sup, Roomie?"

April sighed at her roommate's intrusion, her smile disappearing even faster than it formed. "Hi, Emily." She said in an annoyed tone.

"Hey, April, can I ask you something?"

"You may not be aware of this, Emily, but I'm in the tub. That means I came in here to be alone."

"I know, I know, but this is important." Emily insisted, "I asked you to pick up those boxes containing my computer stuff from storage for the computer class I'm teaching at the night school. Where did you put them?"

"Tell you what, how about you let me enjoy my day off for about... Oh, say an hour or two, and I'll go grab them from storage? Deal?"

"You mean you didn't do it?!" Emily asked in shock. "I asked you _two weeks _ago and you promised me you would! If I come to my new teaching job unprepared, I'll be let go before I even get anywhere!"

"Well you should have reminded me, now shouldn't you?"

"I didn't think that I'd have to ask you twice!"

"Oh, relax! You only have to worry about it until your first class."

"My first class is tonight!"

"Well you should've pulled it out of storage after we moved in."

"I didn't have a job as a computer teacher then, now did I?!"

"And whose fault is that?" April asked, earning a low growl from Emily. "Look, just explain to them something came up and you'll bring in the computer stuff tomorrow. I'll swing by the storage unit tomorrow and -"

"Not tomorrow!" Emily snarled, glaring down at April in the tub. "Right now!"

"Car's in the shop."

"Then take the freaking bus! Or a taxi!"

"Look, you'll get your stuff when I get my day off, alright? Now go away!" April snapped.

"Tempting." Emily said, giving a grin that made April admittedly a little nervous. "But I have a better idea..."

"You get your clothes back when you get my stuff!" Emily barked as she slammed the door of their apartment shut, leaving April outside, soaking wet and in only a white bath towel.

"O-Okay, Emily!" April said with a nervous chuckle, knocking on the door. "You made your point: I will never walk back on a promise again. Now let me back in please before somebody sees me."

"Be glad I was nice enough to let you keep the towel!" Emily said from the other side of the door. "Or perhaps you'd like people to see that you're The Queen of The Itty-Bitty Titty Committee?"

"No! Please don't take my towel!" April begged before adding indignantly, "And I'm not that small!"

"My ten year old nephew is bigger than you." Emily stated. "Now get going! The soon you get to the address on that paper, the sooner you can grab the box, get back, and get clothes back on."

Noticing that her roommate was indeed serious, April tightened her towel as she turned around and looked over the address and unit number on the paper. As she looked back up again, one question came to her mind...

"How am I even going to get there?" She asked.

How does she get there?
