Chapter 5 by pablocho pablocho

How does she look?

Petite, Brunette, Green eyes [Majority vote]

Yessil stepped into the city of Hexville with a staff on hand and a dream of becoming an adventurer. Walking through the main road she marvelled at the sights that surrounded her and the sounds that overpowered her senses. On every sidewalk she could see dwarves and halflings interacting with might bull-like men or tigger-eared women. She even marvelled at the fact that no one seemed to give her any mind as she walked through.

The stone city was a metropolis built around many different sources of ancient magic which were able to keep it afloat even when stuck close to the Great Wilds. Stone buildings shot into the sky with elegant depictions of mythical creatures on their sides; Merchants clattered some of the streets selling imported goods from all around the world; Adventurer’s decided to stay between their journeys to the unknown. The city was filled with splendor and Yessil tried to engrave every aspect on her mind.

The half-elf’s steps quickly lead her to an imposing stone structure with a high dome ceiling and a large set of double doors. Her green eyes shone in delight at the sight, but quickly nervousness began to build on her stomach. She had always dreamt of this moment, she had trained her magical talents for this specific purpose, but being here it suddenly felt too real. She shook her head, she would need to be brave if she wanted to succeed and paralyzing under a building just wouldn’t do. With her head held high she decided to enter and was even more surprised at what she saw.

The guild hall didn’t seem any different from a regular tavern. Wooden round tables and chairs were distributed around where many sat and drank while laughing loudly. A large stage on the side harboured what seemed to be halfling and a human bard in a sort of musical competition that filled the room with a chaotic rhythm. At the end of the room a bartender barked at some of the waitstaff before they hurried along to serve the tables of adventurer’s around. A few stairs lead to a second floor and two wooden doors made it clear that going through the sides would lead to other sections of the guild station.

Nervously Yessil walked forward trying to keep to herself. She noticed a large lizard man in a drinking competition with a red headed dwarf. She noticed a group of hooded brooding individuals occupying all the corners of the rooms but decided to not worry about them for now. Walking along she even got surprised as an orcish man violently making out with a halfling woman who was more than happy to reciprocate. With cheeks flushed red Yessil simply hurried her steps until she reached the bartender.

“Excuse me, who do I ask about becoming an adventurer?” Yessil wasn’t sure how to go proceed but figured the human on the other side of the bar would be kind enough to at least answer that.

“One second love.” The bartender spoke to a waitress in a tongue Yessil didn’t understand before turning his attention back to her. “You looking to join the guild?”

“Yes, if possible.” She nodded lightly as nervousness crawled up her spine once more.

The bartender gave her a look over, clearly examining her and her equipment. Yessil had left with everything she could, but still felt a little self-conscious. She wore simple green robed with golden accents and a sash. On her side she had a satchel for some more common commodities as well as a spellbook strapped to her sash. Her staff was a family heirloom and while imbued with some magical power it was definitely nothing to write home about.

After a few moments the bartender shrugged and jabbed a finger to a table close to the bar. “Lionel handles that sort of stuff. If you ask me, you are making a horrible decision, but I’ve given up dissuading rookies by now. Lionel will get you set up.”

“Thank you?” Yessil wasn’t feeling too confident with the response, but she wouldn’t let that sour her mood.

She walked to the table where a well-dressed elvish looking man sat. His skin was dark grey and his hair shone with a cold white glow. As he looked up he smiled warmly to her and pressed a briefcase.

“Morning lass, anything I can do for you?” He spoke calmly which eased some of the nervousness of the aspiring adventurer.

“Good morning sir, I was told you could help me join the guild?”

“A new adventurer then? That’s wonderful to hear.” Rummaging through the briefcase he took out a slip of paper. Smiling warmly, he handed the document to her. “You’ll simply have to fill your information so we can get your license set up.”

“Thank you. Is there anything else I’d have to do?”

“Well as long as you take adventuring jobs from the quest board over there shouldn’t be any issue.” He pointed to a wall where a few guys where gathered around. “But if you decide to do some exploring on your own and get some treasure we would ask you give some of it to the guild, at least 5% of you get something good. We can’t **** you, but if we find out you are holding it from us the guild will be less likely to give you any aid in the future.”

“Isn’t that some sort of extorsion?”

Lionel chuckled and shrugged lightly. “It can be seen as such, yes. But keep in mind that if you ever need some help and you send a letter to the guild we usually try to make sure our adventurer’s don’t die. We will put a quest encouraging others to answer your call. If you are severely injured you can come over and get some healing. Most station even have some spare bedrooms you can rest upon free of charge.” He looked at her and then rubbed his forefinger with his thumb. “But all that requires money, dear. Money that doesn’t magically appear. Which is why we need everyone to chip on, got it?”

“I see.”

Yessil nodded and filled out her information. Handing over the paper she noticed Lionel reading it carefully. Once he seemed to be done the dark elf simply nodded put it back on his briefcase. He looked back at Yessil and tapped his chin a few times.

“Well miss Yessil I assume you don’t have 100 gold coins on you to pay for the entrance fee, huh?”

The half-elf’s eyes grew wide. She hadn’t really thought that part through and simply shook her head shamed.

Lionel sighed and looked at her once more. He smiled warmly while shrugging once again “Worry not, the process is just going to be harder, that’s all. The fee is to make sure you have some experience, adventurers with a few quests under their belt usually have that coinage before joining.” As he explained he simply pointed to what appeared to be an armoured orc warrior with a giant sword on his back. “However, to prove that newer adventurer’s can join the guild we ask them to do one or two jobs for us before you can enjoy the benefits of the guild.”

“So… what do I have to do then?”

“You seem to be in luck, actually. We have a few jobs you could do as your starting quest.” He opened the briefcase once more and took out some sheets of paper. Placing one down he slid it on the table to the half-elf. “Firstly there seems to be a group raiding goblins harassing caravans close to the city, from the sounds they aren’t many but they can be quite vicious. Goblins are seen as lesser enemies so no one has taken the job yet, you’d have to go alone.”

Lionel waited for a moment, so the information sunk in, before sliding over the second sheet. “Secondly, a new small ruin of the Ancients has been found just outside the city. Apparently, a small earthquake fractured the ground near a farm revealing the entrance. Depending on what you find inside you would most likely pay off the entrance fee and even more. But there is a possibility that what you find won’t be valuable enough.”

With another quick pause the dark elf slid the last paper in front of her. “The last job is much more challenging though. Some nut cook wants to try to some crazy new recipes that requires fruits that can only be found on the Great Wilds. We do have the location of where they are supposed to be and you shouldn’t find the worst the Wilds have to offer, but those lands are still unpredictable.”

Yessil looked at the offers intently trying to decide what she should do

Fight some goblins?

Explore the ruin?

Go into the Great Wilds?

What quest will she take?
