Chapter 16 by Alias The Rat Alias The Rat

Where shall we go next?

Let's watch Officer Darla lay down the law.

Darla drove down the highway, looking for a target or two before getting on to the real work. She saw an SUV going down the road at a rather unsteady pace. Snickering to herself, she turned on her siren and fell behind it. Soon, the vehicle had pulled off to the side of the road and stopped. Darla emerged from her patrol car and strides up to the car window. A young man who looks like he's about halfway through college sits in the driver's seat, nervous, while next to him a balding, middle-aged man slouches, clearly hungover. In the back seat sit two women, a middle-aged woman who seems only mildly less hungover than her husband and a pouting young woman who looks like she just graduated from high school. Darla grins to herself. She has clearly just caught a family vacation and she can't wait to make this trip one they'll never forget.

"He... hello, officer," says the young man, his eyes bugging out as he gets a look at Darla's scanty uniform. "Is something wrong?"

"You have any idea how fast you were going?" she drawls.

"Umm, I was... I was below the speed limit," mutters the young man.

"Well below," says Darla. "Creepingly below. This is a highway. Slowing down is all right for short stretches, when you're going to turn or pull over. Not for driving the entire way..."

"Oh, s-sorry," gulps the young man.

"My son... Anthony's a good kid, officer," says the older woman.

"It's not about how good he is, ma'am," says Darla. "It's about how he was driving." She looks him over. "Out of the car." She glances at the older man. "You too, sir."

"Wha...?" says the older man.

"Just need to check some things," says Darla, grinning to herself as Anthony and his father step nervously out of the car.

How does Darla handle this?
