You think a bit and tell her “I will lend the tomes to ye. I’m also giving you something to keep for your efforts.”

That something was the bone dagger, and 20 rations. “I figure the dagger will help, and as ye have another mouth to feed, the rations will cover that expense. Again because I brought her to you, I need to ensure you are not unfairly put out. No debt owed.”
