A humorous intermission

“Let’s see what we got here… Cheese steaks! Just what I needed.” I went over to my room and got outta my work clothes. Changing into my jeans and t-shirt I came back out and sat to enjoy dinner. After a reheat of course. Checking in with my friends to make sure we were still on for tonight. A few minutes later I had dinner on a plate and was fully content to sit in the living room, listening to a podcast and enjoying my meal. A few bites in I saw the bathroom door open. Mike must have gone to the bathroom while I was changing.

“Oh, uh, Hi.” That, was not Mike’s voice. Looking up I saw a girl in one of mike’s shirts and some shorts. She looked like she was mid nap.

“Hi there, friend of Mike’s?”

“Ya, uh, we haven’t really settled on anything yet so, friend.”

“Are you the one he’s been going out with?”

“Yep. He’s got some plan for us tomorrow.”

“He was telling me about that, it’s a pretty neat idea. I wasn’t that clever at his age.”

“Wanna, drop any hints?”

“No, I wouldn’t do that to the kid.” She gave me an upset scrunch of her face. I chuckled a bit and continued my sandwich.

“Has Mike always been, as quiet as he is?” I was not prepared to answer such a complicated question. My face showed it. I didn’t speed up to eat, But definitely thought about how I wanted to answer.

“The loss of his mom, hit him hard. And so I don’t know if he’s recovered. He hasn’t fully wanted to talk about it with me. I want him to try therapy, but I know for a fact. I can’t **** him into it. He’s gotta go on his own.”

“Well I’m glad to see you know that. I struggled with that for a while.”

“Good to see he’s got another positive influence.”

“Well thank you.”

“He still asleep?”

“Yup”

“Why don’t you get back in there. We’ll have more time to chat when I’m not getting ready to head out. And when you got a quiet night ahead of you.”

“Thanks, I’ll uh. I’ll see you round.”

“I look forward to it.” She went back to bed, I put my food away, and made my way out. My kid’s girlfriend is pretty cool.
