To the north-east, past the Azakh Sea, lies the land of Hyrucia. The north of Hyrucia is dominated by the Gengasha mountains, while the south is mostly farmland. Hyrucia's land is rich in minerals, and has wines that are famous around the world.

The Gengasha mountains are watched by several of Hyrucia's soldiers so the valleys can be protected, unfortunately despite king Bargam's best efforts to eradicate the bandit clans, several still live in the mountains. And even though it's rare, there still are occasions that a group of bandits sneak into a town and ravage it.

Unfortunately this happened to Gavin's town, Runep, when he was six years old. He lost both his parents in the attack, when the news of the attack had spread the next day Gavin's uncle Viktor came to Runep and adopted Gavin, taking him to his farm in the south of Hyrucia.

Viktor Lann had been one of king Bargam's most loyal generals before he retired, he was a smart and well travelled man that taught Gavin how to read and speak both the common tongue, as well as the Jadhi language. He also taught Gavin how to fight, both unarmed and with a sword. When Gavin reached the age of seventeen Viktor passed away, Gavin stayed at the farm until the new land owner came to take over his uncle's farm land.

Even though a man like Gavin could easily find work as a scholar or a soldier, the young man wanted to make a name for himself. So after he sold some of his uncle's possessions and prepared for travel, Gavin grabbed his sword made of the finest Hyrucian steel and booked passage on a ship headed for Arakan and from there he would go to Tharros hoping that he would be able to make a name for himself there.

Gavin is now an eighteen year old man of average height with a lean and fit body thanks to all his years of training. His skin is lightly tanned, and his messy black hair is kept out of his sea green eyes with a red headband. With his prominent cheekbones, masculine jaw and dimpled chin Gavin is seen as a handsome man, but because of his sheltered life Gavin never had a lot of contact with women, making him inexperienced when it comes to sex and rather shy around women.
