Chapter 20 by Squiddog
How does Rovni's family reunion go?
Tense, but well over all
Frine left Rovni at the doors to her fathers chambers promising to join her soon before continuing into the hold, Rovni smiled as she pushed the doors open with a soft creak.
"Dear, your back sooner than expected." A woman, sat at a desk against the opposing wall to her spoke looking down at a book.
"It's been four years." Rovni spoke, knowing her mother was referring to her father, in a moment Rovni's mother pushed her chair back and spun around to see her daughter.
"Rovni!" Thera was a pure human, although much taller than most human women, standing just above six feet tall she was bigger than most human women, complemented with a hourglass body and her form framed by long blond flowing locks that flowed down her shoulders and ended just above her ample chest, Rovni could see why her father had claimed her, "Mother!" Rovni greeted with a wide grin and pulled her mother in for a tight hug.
"Your back, and in good health." Thera said, slowly releasing her daughter and taking a step back, "Welcome home."
Rovni took a breath before speaking, "It is good to be home, but I don't think I will be here for long, father and aunt Frine should be along soon, I have business here, not as a daughter." Rovni explained to her mother.
"What do you mean dear?" Thera began, "Indeed daughter of mine, what is this business you have brought with you?" her father asked entering the room, her aunt following close behind him.
"Well father." Rovni began, turning to meet her fathers gaze, "I am now a chieftess." Rovni declared simply.
With a raised eyebrow and a curious gleam in his eyes, her enormous father responded, "And when did this happen?"
"Well when I was returning from my mercenary work I was bailed up by some goblins, and while weak individually and overall in their tribes, I saw well trained goblins during my time as a mercenary and they are far more dangerous than anyone would assume, so I talked my way into their graces, killed their weak leader and usurped the tribe of about fifty goblins, led them to the area I used to camp out at, led a good raid and am making the rest up as I go along, and here I am, a upstart chieftess with a good chunk of wealth and a small **** to arm, armor and a war camp to build, where better to do business?" Rovni explained, keeping eye contact with her father during her explanation, but from the corner of her eye she could see her aunt to her fathers side looking intrigued by Rovni's answer.
for a moment a tense silence befell the gathered family before a deep, brief chuckle came from her father, "Goblins, and another warband in Dorthinlok, daughter or not, that is not ideal by any means." Came her fathers expected reply, Rovni was about to respond before her aunt spoke up.
"If I may brother, I know the rough area she has set up, well beyond where we raid and if Rovni does her trading here, you indirectly reap the benefits of her raids, and goblins or not, a friendly, or at least neutral warband is better than another hostile one." Frine pointed out calmly to her brother, while strong and an able leader for his own, Rovni knew her father disliked competition and to him, other warbands where nothing but competition, alliances were barely a concept to him.
"Hmm,~ I admit you raise fair points sister, but tell me daughter, what is your current goal with this warband, I find it hard to believe that you have nothing on your mind other raiding." Came Ovgar's reply, leveling his gaze from his sister to Rovni once more.
"Fair, at the moment I want to secure what I have but,... I know there are numerous small goblin tribe and warbands in Dorthinlok, if united and trained they would be a solid **** to secure my own position in the region, if a bit of an unorthodox method to do so." Rovni replied, in truth she made her plan up on the spot but her father would not settle for a vague answer, even if no true answer existed.
Frine was the first to speak up following Rovni's answer, "The goblins cause trouble for everyone as they are now, it could be as beneficial as the trade goods from her raids.." Frine answered, rationalizing Rovni's plan to her brother who silently nodded, mulling over what he had been told, Thera looking on, concerned for her daughter.
For another tense, silent moment everyone awaited Ovgar's decision, "Very well, won't be the first goblins we've outfitted either, and if you trade your plunder here, and don't raid in my territory, than I will accept this." Ovgar relented with a light sigh and the tension that had enveloped the room dissipated.
"That I can do, than it goes without saying the plunder I brought is to outfit and build my warband." Rovni tacked on, and she saw saw a slight smirk on her fathers face.
"We will barter tomorrow, for now daughter go to your old quarters and get some rest, you will need it for the feast tonight." Her father stated and gestured to the door, Rovni left with a nod and exited the room, with a parting smile to her relieved mother, Frine following close behind her.
Shutting the door behind them and making their way down familiar hallways of wood and stone Rovni and Frine fell into step side by side, Frine breaking the silence in the empty hallway they were in, a distance from the room they had left, "That was not what I expected, you have changed, I was certain you would usurp your father." Came her aunts quiet observation.
Rovni glanced at her aunt for a moment, "I was planning to do so, but then I found my goblins and took the chance, now I stand to gain an army and independence, should the day come I know my fathers ways of fighting, he would fail, but not now, now I must appear an asset before I become a threat." Rovni replied, usurping her father would not be unexpected among orc culture, even supported but Rovni had seen and learnt of other ways to attain position and power, influence and intrigue.
Frine grinned at her niece as they arrived at Rovni's old room and entered, inside was rough but very well known to Rovni, a bed of packed hay with thick animal hides atop it, old animal rugs and pelts from her early hunts decorated the floors and speckles of sunlight trickled through wooden shutters on her small window, her crate and sack of gold, as well as the other odd bits were stacked in a pile at the end of the bed, she knew it was all accounted for, no one was dumb enough to steal from her.
"Welcome home dear." Frine said warmly, shutting the door behind them.
