Chapter 26 by trollsmithtroll trollsmithtroll

Why did you stop?

To look at the ship in front of you

"Wow, look at this beauty," Will says quietly. A sleek single-masted sloop is anchored in front of you. It has a dark oak hull, and crisp-looking triangular sails rigged in the Bermudan style. Smaller and faster than a brigantine, a ship like this would be perfect for your purposes.

Captain Blood evidently thinks the same as you, as she confidently strides onto its deck in search of its captain. The group takes it as an excuse to drop the things they were carrying, sitting on the ground and chatting while admiring the ship.

Nearly 20 minutes pass before you see Blood emerge below deck and triumphantly strut back onto the dock. Three well-dressed men follow her, with pleased looks on their faces as well.

"Let the rest of the crew know to come here with the gold," she instructs your group. "We've got our ship."

As Will and Nate head back to get the others, you hang back with Captain Blood, just out of earshot of the well-dressed men.

"They claim to be merchants," she says conspiratorially. "But by the looks of the couple cannons I saw below deck, I think they're more like smugglers."

"If their job is smuggling things, why are they giving up their ship?" you question.

"With how many Spanish doubloons I offered them, it's not as surprising," she says, shrugging her shoulders. "I had to offer nearly all the coin in that chest, but it's worth it to get out of Tortuga as fast as possible. I agreed to drop them—and their cargo—off in Santo Domingo. Between our gold and their cargo, they'll probably be able to buy a bigger ship and an actual crew to man it."

"They sailed this ship with just the three of them?" you ask.

"Yeah, apparently they did. A sloop like this is gonna be easy to sail for us since we've got—what, 15 or 16 people?". You nod in agreement. "This thing is fast too, sails at 12 knots and can maneuver through shoal waters or coves," she continues. "The only question is...what do you want to rename this ship?"

"Cap'n, I think you should be the one to name your new ship," you say deferentially. She grins at you.

"Oh I have a ship already—she's called The Temptation—and I fully intend to get her back soon. And then this ship, the first addition to my fleet, will be captained by my First Mate. That's why I want him to pick the name."

For a moment, you are stunned by the implication. Less than 2 days after sailing into port in Tortuga, you have gone from an unknown crew member to the First Mate of the fiercest female pirate captain in the Caribbean.

From the corner of your eye, you see the crew—your crew now—marching toward the docks, lugging the chest of gold. It's time for you to make your first decision as First Mate.

What do you do?
