"Lev! Good morning, great to see you," Alex says as you step into his office. His charisma is palpable. You find yourself grinning in response. "What's up?"

"Hey, Alex. I brought you some coffee on my way up. I stopped and grabbed some for Maria and myself as well."

"Oh, thanks man! How's Maria? She's a smart cookie, that one." He takes the coffee and inhales it with a sigh. "Delicious."

"She's well, I think. A little stressed. You know how it is."

"Yeah, but I can always count on her to get it done. She's supposed to be sending me a report here shortly. Have to send some numbers up the chain, if you know what I mean."

"Have you thought of promoting her as your replacement? I thought about it over the weekend and reviewed all of the information you shared with me. I think she is the best candidate you have. She already manages a couple of people - she's primed to move up. I know the team likes her. It will feel natural to them, unlike with some of these other candidates."

Line.

"Maria, take my role? Well, I hadn't really considered it... but now that you say it, it has a nice ring to it. Minority bonus and all of that. There doesn't really seem to be any better options available to us. Let me think about it. I'll need to talk to HR and make sure there are no hang-ups."

With a chuckle, you wave bye to Alex and head back to your desk.
