Chapter 5 by Jpyric Jpyric

He leads you out of the room.

Empowered

As you follow down the hall, you feel a need to ask. “So, you knew that this would happen? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Your father sighs. “Prophecy is a strange thing. I’ve found that it’s better to use as a reference than to a guide. So we prepared for this, but you needed to reach the decision on your own.”

Yura looks up at you with her disconcerting purple eyes. Despite being nearly twice your age, she still looked very young, but no one ever doubted her wisdom after hearing her speak. “Prophecy is not set in stone. Even a seer can not always understand what they see. It is a premonition, nothing more.”

You nod, thinking on that as the four of you head into another room, and you’re surprised once again to see that most of your ‘aunts’ are there. All except Clarissa and Kali, in fact. You turn to your father, who chuckles. “Yes, we had this planned. Forgive me for a bit of dramatics. I wanted everyone here to help, although we only need a couple people. Clarissa and Kali have something special as well, but we’ll get to that.”

You look around the room. Most everyone is smiling, except Samara, who looks nervous, and Lynn, who looks worried. Rachel steps forward, and your father nods. “So, we’ve all wondered if you would eventually show a magical talent. It would make sense, seeing as you have two powerful mages as parents. It took Rachel to see that you have one, but it’s hidden, and for good reason.”

Rachel nods. “I think it’s best if we just demonstrate. If I’m right, this will be harmless.”

You look at her, confused. “And if you’re wrong?”

She smiles. “Then I’m sorry about this.”

Sadie giggles. “Don’t worry! Joshie can keep you safe!”

Your dad rolls his eyes. “Samara, if you don’t mind?”

You feel a bit nervous as the literal goddess of **** approaches. Though you know she’s a gentle, loving person, it’s still intimidating. Especially when she lifts a hand, crackling with magic. “Hold still, Nicholas.”

Before you can protest, she whips her hand forwards, a whip of black electricity arcing towards you. However, she seems to stumble on a loose rock just as she does, and the strike goes wide, blasting a chunk out of the floor beside you.

You leap back in surprise. “Hey, what the hell?!”

Your father nods, looking to Sadie. “Your turn.”

The giggling wind goddess floats into the air, and without warning hurls a bolt of lightning at you. However, in another incredible coincidence, a light fixture falls from the ceiling and is obliterated by the bolt, leaving you unscathed.

More confused than ever, you look to your father, who is nodding. “One more test. To be sure.”

With that he simply flicks his wrist, flinging a small fireball at you. At that moment, you feel the floor shiver, probably some shifting due to Samara’s missed attack, and you stumble, the fireball sailing just past you.

Seemingly satisfied, your father nods to Rachel. She smiles. “I was right. Not only that, it’s so subtle that no one noticed until we **** it to be obvious just now. You cannot be harmed by magic, Nicholas.”

You look around. “But…it was all just accidents! You all just missed, somehow…”

Rachel shakes her head. “Your power could be circumvented if it was obvious. Instead of attacking you, they attack the environment, that sort of thing. So, your power essentially generates coincidences.”

Josh nods. “In normal situations, someone would just shrug it off as a fluke. But we’re…well, it’s a room full of gods. So it becomes obvious.”

You shake your head. “That’s…wow.”

Your mother speaks up. “That’s why you’re the one to make this journey. Your power will protect you from magic threats.”

Your father nods. “And as for physical threats…well, let’s go see Clarissa and Kali. They have some gifts for you.”

With that, Josh and Anna lead you on.
