Chapter 9 by Tostito675 Tostito675

What's next?

Open the hill side door

You put your palm to the 'door' and push hard. There's a metallic snap, then it swings open. You are in a long hallway lined with pipes. The hum of distant machinery fills your head and you see a ladder leading down to some sort of artificial river. You jump over the railing and land on a metal walkway, and reach your hand into the water. Your senses tell you the water contains high levels of bacteria and waste.

After a short analysis, , you simply 'know' that nothing in the water is a threat to you. All the same, you are left wishing your hand wasn't covered in it.

"Gross"

The passages are dark and full of twists and access points to other chambers. You knock your knuckle spikes against the railing. The small echo allows you to develop a suprisingly complex spatial awareness of the layout of these tunnels.

Just when you are getting comfortable traversing the dark passages, you hear the voices. At least two of your pursuers.

"I think you're being overly cautious," said a first voice

"Are you dumb as a fucking brick, George? You saw the broken lock. Could've been kids, could've been whatever Mike says he saw." replied a second, slightly higher voice.

"He didn't see shit, Mira. Unless it's the size of a damn Gorrilla, it ain't busting open a steel door. Or maybe you think martians carry crowbars on 'em? The only thing Mike saw was the bottle of whiskey he had for breakfast. This ain't a movie, honey. It was just a fucking meteor."

Inwardly you groan at having left the door open when you came in.

"Why pursue me? I've done nothing to them. I just need to complete my mission."

Wait...what mission?

You rack your mind; there was a sense of purpose, things you were supposed to do; but then it slipped away. You feel incredibly frustrated. For one brief moment, you understood *something* bigger than yourself, some purpose you were meant for; perhaps even a clue to what was happening.

This left you with two options. Attempt to put more distance between yourself and your stalkers, or find out more about them. Remembering the tree, you have a fairly good idea on how you could learn more about them. You don't think the bipeds will approve of your methods, but you find yourself savouring the idea.

On the other hand, with your speed advantage, it may be wiser to try to escape and learn more later.
