Chapter 5 by Zebra Zebra

Wind rider no more...

Once a wind rider...

In this moment of despair and loss, Ben kneels down beside you, tears streaming down his face as well. He gently strokes your remaining feathered arm, whispering words of comfort and regret for what happened.

"I-I am sorry, Dar… I tried to stop him but it all went wrong…" His voice trembles with emotion, guilt etched deeply across his features. Despite everything, he leans forward, pressing a tender kiss to your forehead. It might not be much, but in this dark hour, it is an act of love and solace offered between two friends who have just lost something precious.

As you lie there, feeling the warmth of Ben's touch against your skin, you find yourself drawn towards him - not only because of physical proximity, but also due to the emotional connection that binds you together. You reach out with your one good hand, gripping onto his shirt tightly, seeking reassurance and strength amidst the pain and sorrow.

In response, Ben pulls you closer, cradling your injured body within his arms. The scent of gunpowder fills the air along with the metallic tang of blood from both your wounds and Grun's corpse nearby. But despite these grim reminders of their recent battle, they remain locked in each other's embrace – finding solace in the knowledge that at least one another survived through it all.

Slowly, as adrenaline begins to wear off and reality sets in, you feel weak and exhausted. Your eyes flutter shut, surrendering to the darkness that threatens to consume you. "We need to get out of here… get back to our camp where the other wind riders can help…" Ben murmurs softly into your ear, his voice filled with determination even though he knows how dire the situation truly is. And so, with what little strength remains between them, they prepare for a long journey ahead - carrying not only themselves but also the weight of loss of Dar's wing… They had to walk as Dar could no longer fly… and finding there way like ground crawlers was no easy. Luckily some of the Wind Riders spotted them from the air and swooped down to help….

As the sun began to set on the horizon, casting an orange glow over the landscape, Ben and Dar were finally rescued by the remaining members of their group. The sight of familiar faces brought tears to both of their eyes, relief washing over them like a tidal wave. With each step towards safety, Dar felt stronger knowing that she wasn't alone anymore. He would face whatever challenges lay ahead because Dar knew the wind riders would be right beside every step of the way.

In the days following this harrowing experience, life at the campsite slowly returned to normal – or as close to it as possible after such tragedy. Dar spent most of his time in quiet reflection, coming to terms with losing his wing. But through all the pain and self-doubt, one thing remained clear; he still possessed the spirit of a true wind rider. And so, despite being unable to take flight once more, he vowed never to let the disability define who he was.
