Not...exactly

With a look to your fiance, hoping to give her the courage you don't feel yourself, you push open the door and walk in together unannounced. The walk up to his chair feels so much longer than it really is, especially since he is staring the two of you down with wild eyes the whole time. You gulp and prepare your speech. "Duke Jan, we-" you start to say before Jan bolts upright. "Sonya, you really intend to marry this half man?" he cries in a fit of rage. To your dismay, Sonya quails under his gaze and ferocious tone. "Oh daddy..." she bleats out before bursting into tears. He shakes his head fervently. "Little fool, though I love you your capacity for stupid decisions is a burden! This boy thing can't make you, or any woman happy!" You speak out, not to defend yourself, but for Sonya. "Sonya is perfectly capable of making her own decisions. Either way, the law is on our side!" He bares his teeth in disgust. "Don't quote law at me _boy! _You are in my demesne, and here _I AM THE LAW!" _he shouts thunderously, looking to be on the verge of a breakdown. Despite her tears, Sonya has held strong to you. "The church is on our side, whether you like it or not! If you make me, I'll bring this up to the Holy Father himself!" Jan just seethes at you, perhaps knowing that this is a fight he cannot win. "Fine!" he shouts finally, "Go ruin your life! Just stay with him and don't ever think about coming back!" he roars before walking off, which you never would have thought.

You may have won this battle, but you can't leave things as they are. Sonya loves her family and her home, despite their flaws, and to have to leave each behind forever would crush her. You pull her to you and she cries into your shoulder as you stand there before the empty throne, the last of the servants in the hall sneaking out. But how can you make Jan see reason?
