Chapter 8 by Control Freak Control Freak

Anything notable happen while they read?

Nope, so they end up grabbing lunch

Lucy and Kim sat outside reading for quite a while, occasionally pausing for a few moments to chat briefly but mostly just enjoying each other's company and the beautiful weather of the day. Lucy was too absorbed in her reading to notice the perplexed looks some people passing by gave her, but when that happened for more than a few seconds Kim was quick to silently shoo them away before Lucy could notice.

Lucy had just got past the midpoint of her book when Kim stood up and stretched her arms over her head, "Okay, I'm getting stiff and hungry. You ready to go grab lunch?"

Lucy looked up at her friend. Now that her friend brought it up, she realized that she had neglected to get breakfast that morning, and was starving. She used a piece of paper to save her place before closing the book, then got up and mirrored Kim's stretch, "Yeah, I could go for some food. Here's hoping my new ID will let me."

"Don't worry, I'm sure it'll work just fine," Kim said with a knowing smile, "Now come on! I heard they've got mac-n-cheese today."

The two girls made their way across campus to the cafeteria, and arrived within a few minutes. Once they arrived, they grabbed their trays and got in line. Upon reaching the cafeteria worker serving the fabled mac-n-cheese, Lucy noticed that the woman had given her an extra scoop of it compared to everyone else. Lucy didn't really complain at first, but as they went through the serving area getting their food, Lucy quickly picked up on the fact that all the cafeteria workers were giving her more generous portions of whatever she asked for, and even a couple of additional things she didn't (and ignored her when she brought it up). By the time she reached the register, Lucy had four chicken legs, a heaping bowl of salad drenched in ranch dressing, a pile of french fries, a slice of apple pie, and a pint of chocolate fudge brownie ice cream to go with her already generous helping of macaroni. The cashier looked down quizzically at the large amount of food as he scanned Lucy's card (which thankfully did indeed work), which caused the girl to blush in embarrassment. Once she got her ID back, she headed to the table she usually ate at as quickly as she could without spilling the massive amount of food in the process. Kim followed shortly after, with a much more reasonably portioned tray of food and two paper cups with straws.

"You forgot your drink," Kim said, helpfully handing one of the lidded cups to Lucy, "Lucky you have me to remember for you."

"Thanks," Lucy said, taking it from her once they were both seated. She took a sip from the straw, and grimaced at the unexpectedly sweet taste, "Soda? You know I usually get either water or tea, right?"

"Sorry, **** of habit," Kim said with a wince.

"It's fine," Lucy said with a sigh, before looking at the two mismatched meals, "Not like one soda is going to make much of a difference with what I've got. I mean look at this! Why did they give me so much?"

"Maybe they just really like you," Kim said, taking a sip of her own drink, "Like I said, you're lucky."

"What could I have even done to get them to do that?" Lucy asked.

"Dunno," the blonde replied with a shrug before taking a bite of her mac-n-cheese. She let out a moan of satisfaction, then said with a half-full mouth, "Oh man Lucy, you should try this. It's delicious!"

Lucy raised a brow at her friend's odd behavior, then picked up her fork and took a bite for herself. Mac-n-cheese always tasted good, but...

"I dunno, it doesn't seem that special to me," Lucy said with a shrug.

"Maybe I just have a more refined palate than you," Kim teased with a smirk.

Lucy rolled her eyes at this, "Oh please. If it were up to you, this place would have a McDonald's attached to it."

"Hey, even I know better than to go there every day," Kim said, "Then again, they do have the best fries. These ones come close though. Seriously, pop one in your mouth and tell me I'm wrong."

It went like this for the rest of lunch. As they ate, Kim would take a bite of something, then say it tasted good and urge Lucy to do the same. If Lucy had something she didn't, Kim would ask for a bite of it, then rave about how good that was too and try to convince Lucy to have some (though oddly enough never accepting more of it herself). Eventually though, Lucy and her stomach had enough.

"Seriously Kim, I can't eat another bite," Lucy said with a groan, leaning back in her chair.

"C'mon, you barely finished half of your food!" Kim said, "You don't want to waste it all, do you? At least finish the pie."

"If you want it so bad, you can have it," Lucy snapped, "You finished yours off pretty quick."

"Well I only got half of what you got," Kim said with a frown, "Besides, I'm pretty full. Maybe I can get a box and we can save it for later?"

"Yeah, sure, whatever," Lucy muttered, "But I highly doubt this place has boxes for leftovers."

Lucy was quickly proved wrong on this when Kim returned moments later with several styrofoam carry-out boxes that Lucy swore she hadn't seen in the cafeteria before. She put the pie in one box, then started on the rest of the food.

"Whoa, what are you doing?" Lucy said, sitting back up as her friend dumped a handful of fries into one of the boxes.

"Boxing up your leftovers, what does it look like?"

"Kim, I don't want any leftovers!" Lucy insisted, "Hell, I didn't even want half of this stuff to begin with! Where'd we even keep it?"

"In the common room fridge, obviously," Kim replied, "Long as we put your name on it I'm sure no one else will touch it."

"And if I don't want it?" Lucy asked. Not getting an answer, she continued, "Plus, half this stuff tastes like crap left over. And I don't even think the ice cream will survive the trip."

"Oh, you're right," Kim said with a look at the melting dessert, "You should probably finish it off then."

"I don't want to!" Lucy shouted, drawing the attention of everyone in the cafeteria. Noticing all eyes were now on her, Lucy blushed and stood up, muttering much less confidently, "Look, just leave it, okay?"

Kim stared at Lucy for a long moment, then sighed and said, "Yeah, okay. Sorry for getting pushy. I'm not sure what came over me."

"It... it's fine," Lucy said, picking up her tray and heading out of the cafeteria. She could feel everyone staring at her as she made her way to the garbage can and started dumping all of her leftovers, save for the pie that Kim had kept for herself.

"It's just a shame seeing all that food go to waste," Kim disappointingly muttered under her breath.

"It's their fault for giving me this much in the first place," Lucy said, setting her now empty tray in the collection area.

"I suppose it is," Kim agreed hesitantly, adding her own empty tray to the stack.

Lucy had no idea why her friend was acting so weird. Even when she was eating her own food, Kim had been keeping an eye on Lucy and her progress with her meal. And with her sudden insistence on keeping leftovers, it was almost like she wanted to see Lucy completely stuff herself...

Lucy brushed the thought aside. It sounded ridiculous even in her head. Kim may be overeager, stubborn, and a bit odd at times, but she wasn't crazy or anything. She just needed a bit of a reality check every once it a while. It wasn't anything to worry about.

...Probably.

What do Lucy and Kim do next?
