Chapter 13

Would you?

No

Her offer is tempting, but still so much to learn about the academy, about what would be expected of you. As you lowered your arms and stepped back, Alisa eased her grip, knowing the answer before you said it. "Next year. When I've earned the position." No use wasting both Ionne and Alisa's recommendations if that's all you have. A fortress built on sand is no fortress at all.

Her expression shifted into an adorable pout. "Fine. A promise then! I expect much from you after rejecting me, Makoto." She winked, undercutting the seriousness of her words, leaving you a little uncertain how much the whimsical Student President expected to hold you to them. "Ionne, please look after your friend, make sure she stays in one piece. Although it's getting late, so we'll have to postpone our own chat. Let's have some tea later."

The whirlwind left as suddenly she as came. You had enough presence of mind to bid her farewell properly before the last of her golden strands disappeared behind a thick hedge of bushes. The pair of you were alone again, your maids hanging back like they were part of your own shadows. A feeling of exhaustion washed over you while your hands shuddered. Goddesses, she had seen you and sister together and then told her no.

Even if appearances could be deceiving, she seemed to... approve. Sensing no malice or deception. Leaving the question of how she managed to achieve the position of Student Council President unanswered.

A reassuring arm wrapped around your waist, easing some of your fears by its presence. Ionne leaned her against your shoulder, breathing deeply. "We're together again. Focus on that and I'll talk with grande sœur... Make Crescent Glaive your own and join me on the council. As she said: it's a promise."

"A promise." You agreed. Thoughts turning to the upcoming initiation ceremony.
