I tried to make myself small behind the whispy plant leaves and hope the person does not come into the hallway and turn my way. I cringed hearing the stairway door creak open. Then I watched as a thick-necked male security guard who looked like he lifted weights in his spare time stepped into the hallway. My heart was beating so fast it was about to burst through my chest.

The guard turned away and headed down the hallway away from me. I watched his thick legs and wide back until he turned a corner. I had to be more careful now that security was patroling the stairways and hallways. I saw behind me a wide opening in the hallway and figured that would be a good place to get out of sight and think. I scampered in there and felt around in the dim light to figure out it was some sort of waiting room. I got in the back corner and sat behind the end of a couch. I clutched my knees against my chest, still trembling at the near capture with that guard. I felt moist under my armpits. I planned to wait until much later to make my escape into the bowels of the hospital and escape.

I fliched awake and realized I had fallen asleep. My butt bone was sore being pressed on the hard floor for hours. The waiting room light was still off but more light came into the room since more lights were on in the hallway. My chance to escape was gone now that I saw lots of nurses, attendants, and doctors moving in both directions like streams of fish. There was no way I could get out without being seen. It was only a matter of time when someone would use this waiting room.

Making my mind up, I knew what I had to do. I would make a sprint the twenty yards to the stairway door and fly down the steps to the basement. I saw no other way out. I crept to the other side of the waiting room until I was near the edge of the opening and heard all the chatter and footfalls of people going about their work. I knew what I had to do, but I could not get up the nerve. I started and stopped so many times.

Then a hand reached around the corner near my shoulder and snapped on the light. I felt like a roach in the middle of the kitchen, caught in the light. A second later and a nurse appeared and said, "You two can wait in here while your mother is in surgery."
