Chapter 8 by MissTaken MissTaken

What do you tell him?

No.

Free food sounds great, but you can't go to lunch with Rick. Not under these circumstances, anyway. Maybe some other time, when it's apparent that he understands you'll never be more than friends, but definitely not now. He might get the wrong idea and think that you're on a date, and if he does, you know what he'll be expecting afterward. You need to resolve this situation sooner rather than later, and it doesn't matter if you do so via text. This isn't a breakup.

"OMG, Rick," you type. "I'm so sorry! I swear I didn't write that. I'm just now seeing it. My asshole sister thinks she's funny. Please tell me your wife didn't see!"

You think the subtle reminder that he's spoken for was a nice touch, reminiscent of the time he reminded you of that same fact years ago. As you wait for his response, you pour a cup of coffee and bring it to your lips, breathing in the aroma as you sip. By the time Rick replies, you've poured a second.

"Is that the truth," his text reads, "or did you think I was going to turn you down when I didn't respond right away, so you tried to save face?" As you're reading it, you receive another.

"I've been busy today at work. That's why I didn't respond. I wouldn't reject you again. I wish I hadn't before, and things are different now. I want you to know that."

You suppose you already did know that. It appears that the tables have turned on poor Rick. You feel bad, but you need to make it clear that you're not going to cheat on your husband. "I know, Rick," you type, "but things are different now on my end, too. I'm committed to my husband, and it really was my sister who sent that."

"Well, that's disappointing."

"I'm sorry! You're a great guy, though. If it doesn't work out with your wife, there are plenty of other women who would jump at the chance to take her place."

"Well, I want you, and I know you want me, too. Wouldn't it be such a waste if we never did anything about it? Not even once?"

Oh, boy. He's really trying to plead his case, isn't he? It looks like you're going to have to be more firm with him. "Look, Rick," you write, but another text pops up before you can decide what to type next.

"I could **** you," it says. "I could show your husband a screenshot of that text."

Immediately upon reading it, you feel faint. How could he threaten you like this? You thought the two of you were friends. You thought you knew him! You have known him for so long, and you never would have imagined him capable of something so sleazy. No, this isn't him. You refuse to believe it, and you tell him so.

"You wouldn't do that," you write, then add "please don't" before sending.

"You're right," he replies. "I wouldn't." You breathe a sigh of relief at this, but there's more to the text. "You misunderstand me," it says, "I could **** you if you wanted me to. I know you want me, Jen. It might make it easier if you could pretend that you had ****. Maybe you could even convince a part of yourself that you didn't, so you wouldn't feel guilty about it afterward. You'll have done it to preserve your marriage, and when it's over, I'll hand you my phone so you can delete everything."

It's an interesting proposition. You'll give him that. You can tell that he's been thinking it through for a while, and thinking about you for a while. How long has he been drafting that proposal in his head? Hours? Months? It doesn't matter. Trying to be curt, you reply with a simple "no."

"Okay. Well, what about the picture you promised me? Can you give me that, at least, and we'll call it even?"

God, the picture. Why did you promise him another picture? Oh, who are you kidding? You know damn well why. It was fun, flirting with Rick, until Janie had to ruin it. You were enjoying the attention and got caught up in the moment. It happens, but you can't let it happen again. The inappropriate banter must stop, today.

That being said, you did make a promise. Shouldn't you fulfill that promise? Rick's been a good friend. Can't you do this one thing for him? After all this, and with everything that he's going through at home, it would seem almost cruel not to, and would it be so unbearable knowing that a cute guy was wanking it to you on a nightly basis? Maybe if you give him what he wants, he'll agree to keep things platonic from here on out.

Will you do it?
